(SOLVED) No Sound Dell XPS One 2710

Post by Mike365 »

I have installed Mint 19.1 on a Dell XPS One 2710 and there is no sound coming from the speakers or headphone jack. The sound works fine with Win 10 but not with any Linux distro.
I have reinstalled Alsa and Pulse to no avail. Alsa sees the sound card (Realtek ALC3260) but changing various settings has no affect.
I have tried to find a driver for the card but can only find one for Windows. Is there a work around?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Mike365.

Check for mutes by running alsamixer in the terminal. When it opens, you may need to press F6 to select the card with the Realtek ALC3260 chip.

Muted columns have MM at the bottom. Use left and right arrow keys to select columns. Use up and down arrow keys to change levels. Use the m key to toggle between mute and unmute.

If no luck there, paste back the output of running inxi -Fxz and aplay -l in the terminal. Also, start a song or video then run pacmd list-sinks in the terminal and paste that output as well.

Good luck.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to help me, it is really appreciated. Below are the three outputs you suggested. There seems to be something weird going on with PulseAudio as when I try to run it, it comes up with the following error message.

Connection to PulseAudio failed. Automatic retry in 5s.
In this case this is likely because PULSE_SERVER in the Environment/X11 Root Window Properties or default-server in client.conf is misconfigured'
This situation can also arise when PulseAudio crashed and left stale details in the X11 Root Window. If this is the case then PulseAudio should autospawn again, or if this is not configured you should run start-pulseaudio-x11 manually.

If I start pulseaudio in the terminal using pulseaudio -D the output is [pulseaudio] main.c: Daemon startup failed.

Ahhh. So it's no pulseaudio running as the reason. What is the output of running pulseaudio -vvv in the terminal? You may need to hit Ctrl+C to stop it.

When pasting large blocks of text, please enclose the results in-between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

This should fix you I think:

Code: Select all

sudo chown -Rc $USER:$USER $HOME
Followed by:

Code: Select all

pulseaudio --start

Hi there, well Pulseaudio is definitely there now but there are still no system or video sounds. Do you have any other ideas or outputs that could help?

Now you should be able to get the results of pacmd list-sinks while a song is playing.

Can you plug in some headphones and do that again? I'll look to see what I can find about the speakers.

Now try without headphones to see if the speakers work. If that doesn't work, delete the files in ~/.config/pulse then run pulseaudio -k in the terminal. Restart the browser if that's what you're using to play sound as well.

We're almost there!

Also, if none of that works, paste back the results of cat /sys/class/sound/hwC0D0/init_pin_configs

In your File Manager, click on View > Show Hidden Files

Then you'll be able to select the .config folder then inside that open the pulse folder. Delete everything in there (I think it's 7 files.) When you then run pulseaudio -k in the terminal the files will be regenerated. Once done, test the speakers.
