LM 19.1 Gaming much slower than 18.3

Post by SpookyWatcher »

I did a complete fresh install on a new Nvme and decided to install 19.1 for the longer LTS.

Everything looked fine and was fresh installing my steam games (nothing came from backups only fresh installs on this). Launched a few of them and noticed they were not buttery smooth like in 18.3 It was a remarkable difference.

So I decided to install 18.3 over the 19.1 install, wipe it out but keep the /home so I don't have to re-download everything.

The 18.3 install went smooth. I just had to reset the panels to get them working correctly. And now the games are super buttery smooth again. The only difference is 19.1 and the default nvidia driver (I think it was 391) vs 18.3 and nvidia driver 384 and of course the kernel.

But it is such a difference that in my eyes they are unplayable on 19.1

Is it a different compositor? It shouldn't matter if it is cause I have disable compositing on fullscreen. Is it the nvidia driver? I tried everything I know including managing 3d settings via nvidia instead of application but nothing worked to smooth it out. I tried vsnyc on, vsync off, vsync with gsync, without gsync. Nothing. Could not get it to look as good as 18.3

I'm interested in getting it to work on 19.1 for the LTS being a couple years longer.

Incorrect strategy #1.

You have 2 500 GB hard drives. Why steamroll over 18.3 when you could also have 19.1 for testing with all that space? You can dual boot both off 1 drive or keep them on separate drives.

Keep 18.3 for now. You have 2 years to figure it out. Test 19.1 and there will be some people who can help (hopefully) with the issues involved.

Incorrect strategy??? Fresh install of 19.1 is incorrect strategy? Reading comprehension... I did not steam roll over 18.3 it was complete fresh install of 19.1 (this is a new 970 evo nvme). But the performance was so bad that I steam rolled over 19.1 to test if it was the new drive or something indicative of 19.1

After steam rolling over 19.1 and installing 18.3 OVER 19.1 and keeping the same /home it was back to good performance. Yes I still have my orginal 18.3 on a seperate ssd. But again reading comprehension....I want to get 19.1 to work

Ok...confirmed.

I went out and bought second 970 evo nvme 500gb. Identical to the other one. Why? Cause. Plus on the strix b250h I can run both at the same time. So I took out my original ssd (the slow sata one with all the original). So now all I have are the two nvme drives.

I did a clean install on both. One was 18.3 The other was 19.1

Did a clean download on both of all my steam games.

And the 19.1 is disappointing

The 18.3 is so buttery smooth when I play it gives me vertigo and makes me wanna puke. (that's what I want with 19.1) Next is trying different kernel and nvidia driver on 18.3 to match 19.1 and see if different or the same.

Anyone have any ideas?

uname -r
gives the running kernel. Keep 19.1 kernel same as 18, reboot and test. Good luck.

I'm interested in how this goes for you, SpookyWatcher. Any updates? Did you try different nVidia driver versions?
