Fresh install, no audio from sound card

Post by famicommander »

I had been running Linux Mint 17 for years on the same machine, was working fine earlier today. I installed 19 and I cannot get any sound out of the sound card, an Asus Xonar DG. The HDMI audio running out of the video card (GTX 650ti) works fine. The sound card is hooked to a 5.1 Creative analog speaker setup. The sound menu settings do not work. It sees the sound card but when you select analog output, you get nothing. Volume is turned all the way up on all channels.

Hi famicommander.

I suggest you install and run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol.) It has more options than the default sound settings.

If you still can't get it working, paste back the results of inxi -Fxz and aplay -l

Good luck.

No change with the Pulse Audio Volume Control. It shows sound as being played but nothing comes out of the speakers. Here are the outputs of those commands

Okay. Play something with sound and while it's playing get the output of pacmd list-sinks and paste that back here.

It's playing to the HDMI port. You can go to the Configuration tab and turn HDMI to off, and see if that forces it to the analog-surround-51 profile.

While doing this, you can look at the Output Devices tab and the Playback tab to see what you have available.

No, it's the same result with the HDMI turned on or off. I just turned it on so I could hear something.

Okay, on the Output Devices tab, remove the checkmark on the HDMI setting by clicking on it, then test.

You could also try pacmd set-default-sink 1

I already did that before I posted the thread.

When sound is playing but not heard, what options do you have on the Playback tab of pavucontrol? Click on the box above the volume slider for options.

The only options are to lock the channels together or mute/unmute. The volume slider is moving up and down as if there is sound playing but there is none.

This is a little weird to me. Your list-sinks showed analog as the default port, but was playing to HDMI.

Go back to the Configuration tab of pavucontrol. Is there another 5.1 setting you can choose there than the one currently selected?

This is rather convoluted, but see if this works.

CAUTION: Turn your sound down a little as you try this.

Start a video, then do pacmd list-sinks again. It should return the same beginning section as the first time like this:

Code: Select all

* index: 1
	name: <alsa_output.pci-0000_05_00.0.analog-surround-51>
Take note of the index number for the analog output here in case it's different.

Now run pacmd list-sink-inputs to find it's index number, the beginning of which should look like this:

Code: Select all

1 sink input(s) available.
    index: 94
	driver: <protocol-native.c>
Now you can move the audio stream with, in the case of the above, pacmd move-sink-input 94 1

Does that make it audible?

Updated to 19.1 today in hopes that it would fix this issue but it hasn't.

My speakers work fine when hooked to other devices, the soundcard is detected, it shows sound as being played, but nothing comes from the speakers.

Not sure why I didn't get to this last time, but run alsamixer in the terminal, and when it opens press F6 to choose the Xonar device. Any columns with MM at the bottom are muted. Use the arrow keys to select columns, and the m key to toggle mute.

Also see if any columns have the word disabled. The up/or down arrows will change that.

Be aware that it's possible that not all columns are displayed. Keep pressing the right arrow key to ensure you can see everything.

Good luck.

There isn't even a volume bar on the far right one, stereo upmixing (front+surround)

There are only seven categories:
headphone (not muted, has volume bar at 62)
s/pdif (muted, no volume bar)
s/pidif loopback (muted, no volume bar)
analog input (muted, has volume bar)
analog output, multichannel (no volume bar, no mute indicator at all, just blank)
digital input (muted, has volume bar)
stereo upmixing, front and surround (no volume bar or mute indicator)

Go back to this one and hit the up/down arrow until it says multichannel or similar.
