Don't turn it off with the power button. It looks like you can open a terminal; do that and enter:

Code: Select all

sudo shutdown now
or

Code: Select all

sudo reboot now
after each, enter YOUR password, which you won't see. Hit <CR>

If you really get stuck, look up the "REISUB" method - hold down Alt and SysRq (=Print Screen key) while slowly typing REISUB will get you safely restarted. REISUO = shutdown rather than restart.

But before you do anything - where's that menu button? Do you have a task-bar somewere...? (I don't know Cinnamon).

The menu is an applet. Maybe it's missing? Rightclick in an empty space on the panel, choose 'Add applets to the panel' and go from there.

Yes, at the bottom on my laptop here is the same basically as the 19.1 cinnamon on the pc....except here I Have: Menu, desktop, terminal, etc

And on the new install I do not have the first one, the menu button. There I have desktop, firefox, terminal, files. That is all [on the left side]

Looking at my desktop here on my laptop and comparing with the pc monitor(of the new install) Both have Computer and Home Icons on the top Left. It looks like on the new install that they are just a little closer to the edge of the screen. Maybe menu icon in bottom bar is off the screen?

Is my screen not matching the display size, maybe? How do I change/check that? Or is there a way to add a menu button to my desktop?

[This is why I got rid of windows 10 right away on the new machine, I could not find the menu. Irony]

Do a right click on the panel bar, then click on System Settings. Then under Hardware group, click on Display. There find the setting for Resolution. Change that setting to something lower, then click Apply.

with accesiblilty, account details, applets, date/time, desklets, desktop,
extensions, general, hot corners, input method, language, notifications
online acct, panel, prefered applications, privacy, screensaver, startup applic.
windows, window tiling, workspaces

Would like to know what <CR> is if I need it in the future... Thanks

No, but there's a panel. :P
Its standard position is at the bottom and the menu button is normally at the far left.

I can answer that question. :)
<CR> (carriage-return) is the command when you hit the Enter key.
