Problem with Mint installation

Post by Slowpoke47 »

Dell desktop, running Windows 7 on separate, second HD. Just removed and replaced the original HD, which has Vista, and successfully installed Mint Cinnamon 19.1. But the BIOS will not run the W7 HD, shows it as "disabled." How do I get the bootloader to present a choice at bootup between the two drives?

Try boot-repair to dual-boot the second HD.

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yannubuntu/boot-repair
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install boot-repair

Thanks for your response. I entered all three lines as you typed them. During the process, the system asked for a password (supplied) and printed several lines of text before I was finished entering your text.

When all typed, response is "unable to locate package boot-repair"

Slowpoke47, were these lines typed separately?

Yes. To get to a new line, I pressed "enter" which brought up a new line with user name, etc. Seems like the system was working on the first line while I was typing the second, etc.

The "missing" HD does appear in "Disks" in the left panel. See below- copy-and-paste from the Mint user manual- seems like the dual boot function is attainable, just need the correct command sequence. No idea how or where to do that.

The Boot sequence
Upon reboot, if you have more than one operating system installed, you should see a
“boot menu”. Once Linux Mint is finished loading you should see a new screen inviting
you to enter your username and password. This screen is the “MDM Login Manager” and
is commonly called “MDM”. Enter the password you chose during the installation.

You should make a boot-repair USB, if it fails use a CD/DVD.
