Install Enlightenment E17 desktop on Mint

Enlightenment desktop on Mint

Image

I installed enlightenment desktop on mint, and it works, and looks great.

mumbo719 posted instructions on how to install Enlightenment, it worked for me, so I will quote him on the installation. P.S. He got the information from tcrroadie @ Ubuntu Fourms.

Make sure your system is up to date.

In a terminal run the following commands.

Code:
sudo aptitude update

Code:
sudo aptitude upgrade

Next we will add the needed repository for E17 to our apt sources list.

In a terminal copy and past the following command.

Code:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Add the following repositories to the end of your apt sources list.

Code:
## E17 Repository "e17.dunnewind.net"
deb http://e17.dunnewind.net/ubuntu edgy e17
deb-src http://e17.dunnewind.net/ubuntu edgy e17

Save and close gedit.

Add the key.

Code:
wget http://lut1n.ifrance.com/repo_key.asc

Code:
sudo apt-key add repo_key.asc

Install Enlightenment E17

Code:
sudo aptitude update

Code:
sudo aptitude install e17

Thanks for the information mumbo719, and tcrroadie..

Now lets dress it up a bit.

Once enlightenment is loaded, Log out of mint and Log back in selecting "enlightenment" in the sessions menu.

(This install of enlightenment works for ubuntu, kubuntu, xubuntu, mint, and several other distro's).

once booted into enlightenment, left click on the desktop, then scroll down to "configuration" and click on "Modules".

Now you should be in the module menu. left click on the first icon "Alarm". Click "Enable".

Scroll down to "deskshow" in the Module Settings menu that you should still be in. Enable it in the same manner.

Now you know how to add items to the applications pool.

Scroll down to the next icon "Dropshadow". It is already enabled, click on the "Configure" Button.

Click on Blur Type "Medium"

Click on Shadow Distance "Far"

Click on "Apply"

Click on "Snow"

Enable it and click on the Configure button.

then uncheck "Show Trees" and select "Sparse"

Now you have snow on your desktop. you can do the same thing with rain, and you can also add flames, Cool!!

I would also Enable the Mixer, Mail, Net, Taskbar, Weather, Windowselector, and Wlan icons.

Close the Module Settings Module. lol

Left click on the desktop again. slide down to "Configuration" and select "Wallpaper".

Select the "System" button.

left click on "Blue_Sky_Tree".

If you want, you can select a different system desktop for each desktop by going to the advanced area of this module, but I am not going to go there, You will figure it out.

Click "Apply" and close.

Right click on an empty part of the shelf at the bottom.

Navigate to "Configure Shelf Contents".

The "Shelf Content" Module will open.

I selected Cpufreq, and Temperature in the "Selected Gadgets" (right side) and click "remove Gadgets" one at a time (only if you want to, they did not work on my computer, so why have them on the desktop).

here you can add and remove the items you want. You will notice that the items you added in the beginning are in the left tray (Available Gadgets). Now you can add the ones you want to your desktop.

Please feel free to let me know if I missed something. [/b] :D :D

whoah... now thats bloody fast!!!! WHOAH!!! I'm looking more into this ... :P :P
Windows is extremely fast after a fresh install. If you want to make it stay that way: - don't use it.

Yeah E-GNOME is basically using GNOME and Enlightenment at the same time.
You can also have E-KDE.

I was just wondering if Mint would ever come out with a E17 version. I just paid to download Elive Linux and I loved the way it looks, I just didn't like Elive. With what I've seen from the mint developers I'm sure someone here could do a way better job. So Clem, Boo what do you say could there be a E17 version of mint in our future.

Ummm... The Linux Mint community was making a huge deal about the Linux Mint E17 distro that is coming out this month :P
I appreciate you want it, I guess your wish came true 3 months ago :D . For more info check this site - http://linuxminte17.wordpress.com/
I want all questions, suggestions and feedback to be on this blog that I've just shown you. All technical problems are to be posted in Linux Mint Forums. Elive is a terrible distro because it uses the old version of E17, which is a disaster. And there isn't any autologin and thats the reason I stopped using it after a week. All the info that you might find in Linux Mint forums is on this blog, so there is no need for checking Linux Mint for Mint E17 updates.

Cheers,
molom

You know right after I posted this I noticed there is a E17 community and I'm so glad. I was using kde which I loved now I'm using gnome and have dressed it up the way I like and then I discover E17 and now I can't wait to see what mint can do with it.

I followed you instructions exactly, but I am unable to select enlightenment from the sessions when i logoff/logon/reboot. It doesn't even show up. Please help also, I have a question. When you switch between gnome, kde, fluxbox, whatever, does it still let you use your programs you have installed?

Hi, that looks cool

but I've got a question before I begin: what about uninstalling e17 in case I don't like it? Can I use both desktops(gnome and e17) parallel?

If you want a more polished E17 desktop check out Open-geu it includes a tray for those who like them.
It is still on it gutsy base though so it won't be amazing in every respect.
