Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
alright here is an update, Not sure whats going on with the Nvidia cards but mine are all seeing a huge hit in performance. Oh by the way got the second 1080ti back up should be getting a solid 3.2 million PPD was rolling about 3.4-3.6
1x 1080ti gimped from 1.2 million ppd to 941k
1x 1080ti gimped from 1.3 million ppd to 968k
1x 2070 gimped from 1.2 million ppd to 917k. This was a gift from a friend.
1x 980ti gimped from 600k ppd to 467k
1x 980ti dead
Awaiting Radeon VII, I heard they make 1.6 Million PPD

Not sure if it has anything to do with your problem but there is a 2nd instance of you on the stats page and it is active.battlenut wrote: ⤴Mon Mar 18, 2019 5:59 am alright here is an update, Not sure whats going on with the Nvidia cards but mine are all seeing a huge hit in performance. Also can you ck your logs for more info on the throttling or whatever it is?

fixed, Bwaahaahaahaa!!!!!
Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
I talked to people over on OCN that where I learned all my hardware stuff back in the day. they said that what is happening is normal and it should go back up in a few days.
Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
Hi all,
battlenut
good news for you.
today I had another work unit where after each 1% done it showed an error about numbers not matching. This is the same error I had a couple of days ago. It had reached 20% before I noticed it.
Purged all and re-installed folding and am back up and running again.
Best regards Keith

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
I'm in! Been a long time since I did any folding. Good to be back. Also, already #102 on team stats? huh.
Questions:
1 - htop shows two PID's for the fahclient and both are showing 98-100% of CPU - this seems like a bit much, especially long term. Is this normal? Can it be adjusted?
2 - In general, what are the long-term effects of running the client? Are there wear and tear concerns for CPU, GPU, etc?
Thanks

From My many years at OCN and folding Myself, as long as you can keep it cool your good. the heat is what causes components to wear down excessively.donblanco wrote: ⤴Mon Mar 18, 2019 11:17 am I'm in! Been a long time since I did any folding. Good to be back. Also, already #102 on team stats? huh.

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
Hi donblanco and welcome to the team.
If you’re running the fah control interface you can set the number of CPU cores you want to use. If you are CPU and GPU folding at the same time you must leave at least 1 CPU core free for the GPU to use. By default, fah will use as many cores as it sees fit. if it detects a GPU folding it will, for instance, fold at CPU3 on quad core.
As always heat can be an issue on either piece of hardware so knowing how hot things are is important. Heat is the main enemy for hardware. Folding on hardware that is cooled properly has no long term negative effects.
Most who fold on GPU don’t bother with the CPU because the points earned are low compared with the extra power needed, and lessens the chance of bogging down the system.
Hope this helps and check back if you can.

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
FAHControl says I don't have a GPU (Intel HD 630) so I guess I'll just tinker with the CPU settings. I changed it from -1 to 1 and so far it seems to have dropped the CPU temp from 150F to below 130. Still seems a bit warm for every day use though...darktheme wrote: ⤴Mon Mar 18, 2019 5:44 pm Hi donblanco and welcome to the team.

Intel dual core i3 7100 and HD 630 graphics (kaby lake, I think)

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
Your temps are okay,130 to 150f translates to 55 to 65c and that is perfectly acceptable for Intel CPU’s. I like to stay under 70c and Intel rates them up to 90.
You could get an after market CPU fan and shave a little more off that if you want.

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
when I check htop it shows FAHClient using 99-101% CPU - is this expected behavior?
Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
if your folding on your CPU I believe so.
Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
Pretty much what mine's doing. Getting through a WU approx every 4 days so far (a drop in the ocean) but I assume the point count means more than the number of WUs. Might try running on both cores if it doesn't get too hot, whilst the machine isn't being actively used.
I also see the machine hasn't been rebooted for 126(!) days .. htop adds the (!) around 120 days I think .. about time I updated it, I suppose. Any special considerations i.e. should I shut down the FAH client first, or will it still resume where it left off? (Sorry, newbie question, but this really is new to me).

Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
I think it will carry on from the last check point, usually the last full percentage (EDIT: if you reboot) but since you haven't updated in 126 days I would expect a new kernel is in your future so you might want to 'Finish' your project, then do your updates.BG405 wrote: ⤴Tue Mar 19, 2019 2:25 pm I also see the machine hasn't been rebooted for 126(!) days .. htop adds the (!) around 120 days I think .. about time I updated it, I suppose. Re: Folding@home-Team Linux Mint-76140
Good point, I'll leave it until the next WU is complete (should be about there now).
I'll also have to see what GUI options there are, haven't actually had the TV on the PC input since before I set up FAH, did it remotely ..
