New install of mint 19.1 on HP Envy, 17" 4700MQ, 480gb SSD, 16gb RAM cd/dvd do not work.

I know the drive is working but it does not show up anywhere (file browser, BIOS at boot, K3b) Everything else works, even got the beatsaudio working with HDAJackRetask (4 speakers 2 subs ).

Please post back from lsscsi - you may have to install it from the Package Manager first - this will show your optical devices your system sees that are attached

below is the output of my machine
Aspire-E5-575G:~$ lsscsi
[1:0:0:0] cd/dvd Slimtype DVD A DA8AESH XA11 /dev/sr0
[2:0:0:0] disk ATA Micron_1100_MTFD A020 /dev/sda
[3:0:0:0] disk Seagate Backup+ BL 0419 /dev/sdd
[4:0:0:0] disk Seagate Expansion+ A200 /dev/sdb
[5:0:0:0] disk Seagate BUP Slim BK 0107 /dev/sdc

Also it will be hidden until you insert a cd or dvd in it

0:0:0:0] disk ATA KINGSTON SA400S3 B1D1 /dev/sda
[4:0:0:0] disk ATA Hitachi HTS54505 A6C0 /dev/sdb

Seems to be a hardware problem, I will get a different drive tomorrow that worked in an older HP with a Debian install, I tried tried a Debian live in this but no luck.

I now have tried 3 different drives that works in other machine, still no luck, tried all different BIOS settings possible, no luck . Either it is a hardware failure on the main-board or it is disabled somehow.

Just curious if you have a USB external cd/dvd drive handy to see if that works?

No external handy, I am fixing to get one though :) It takes my USB 3¼ inch floppy without problem. My old canon laser LBP 2900 I cannot get to work though, have it working on my old acer dual core with mint 17.3 after a lot of hassle so it should be possible, it is about some 32-it drivers it needs.

You can get your Canon LBP 2900 drivers from here - is it a Laser SHOT or i-sensys?

https://driver-canon.com/canon-laser-sh ... river.html

Look for CAPT Printer Driver for Linux Version 2.70 it is toward the bottom of page

For the i-Sensys

I'm assuming the Kingston drive was added. If you remove the Kingston drive from the system, does that restore use of the CD/DVD drive?

What is the output of

sudo lshw -C disk

Should show you all disk devices including DVD/CDROM drives. They will be noted with their logical names included. lshw should be installed but sudo apt-get install lshw will install it if not

Also check with HP to see if there is a BIOS Update

PDATE) New install of mint 19.1 on HP Envy, 17" 4700MQ, 480gb SSD, 16gb RAM cd/dvd do not work.

Post by bearozo »

Sudo lshw -C disk only shows my two HDDs. I now have a brother laser and it works great with no hassle, choice of .rpm or .deb för linux :)
