[SOLVED] kernel 4.18.0.18.68 offered 2x: installed, now network gone ! HELP.

Post by Klaas Vaak »

I am on 4.18.0.17 and the Update Manager lists 4.18.0.18.68 twice for updating?
How is this possible? What does it mean?

Are you 100% certain that you're reading it right? I can't tell you because you haven't included a screen dump. I cut the inxi output because it's superfluous.

Upload a jpeg, here for example: https://imgbb.com/

I assume you mean a screenshot of the Update Manager. You can find it here https://ibb.co/ZJtV7B6

Reason: Using the [rimg] tags (for remote images) with the link to the actual image makes your image appear directly inside the post. Nice, huh. :-)

Probably two different packages for two different elements pertaining to the Linux kernel. Just install both.

Or, if you're curious: close Update Manager and do sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. That should give you more information.

I did the sudo apt-get dist-upgrade bit (will try to remember that for future use) is showed me a list of packages to install, to remove (autoremove), and some it would remove and was holding back. So I gave the go-ahead for all and the process went smoothly. After that I refreshed the Update Manager and both 4.18.0.18.68 offers were gone.
So, once again, thanks a lot for your help.

Pjotr, I was a bit too quick off the mark. After the installation everything was fine, though I noticed that my WiFi icon had changed:
the vertical bars were gone and it showed a monitor instead. Still, everything worked fine.
Then, suddenly the internet connection was gone. I shut down and restarted. Now the monitor is gone, and in the menu the driver manager is gone.
From the Grub I selected the recovery mode, repair network, but no change.
I tried an earlier kernel, 4.18.17-generic, still no change.
I tried kernel 4.15.0-46 generic, no change: still no network icon and no driver manager in the main Menu.

What can I do? Only reinstall Mint?

Did you perhaps inadvertently turn off WiFi by means of the Fn key combination that does that (airplane mode)? Or did you flip a hardware switch?

No I did not. There is no hard switch anyway. Furthermore, a USB stick is not detected anymore, and in the file explorer (Thunar) the root file system is shown twice, and the EFI directory is not accessible anymore.

Do you have a Timeshift snapshot?

No, I don't. After installing Mint I tried to get TS to save to a USB stick but it could not detect the image afterwards, even though it was there. No one on this forum had a solution, so I left it at that. I only back-up my personal data, of course,in the cloud, and the packages and home directory with Aptik on a USB stick.

From your question I understand I will have to do a completely fresh installation, right?

Is this problem related to SystemD at all?

systemd is unlikely, but for the rest I don't know. Could be anything, up to and including hardware failure.... Very strange. :?

Hardware failure unlikely: the network icon was changed with the kernel upgrade. When I clicked on it, it said I could not access it, though internet was still available, until a short while afterwards.
1 thing I have learned from this: the golden rule I mentioned recently in the other thread and that another commenter ridiculised (stick with the kernal series the distro came with, i.e. 4.15 in my case) should be adhered to !!! Yes, my 1st upgrade from 4.15 to 4.18 went well, but the risk of problems is much enhanced, as this proves incontrovertibly.

I take it you see no other solution tha, in the absence of Timeshift, a complete, fresh reinstall, right?

It means you didn't read the description.

1) linux-headers-generic-hwe-18.04 linux-image-generic-hwe-18.04
2) linux-generic-hwe-18.04

Klaas.

Save yourself a lot of wasted time trying to fix your installation. Re-install right from the beginning, and this time don't ignore any warnings or skip over any reminders to set backups.

Yes, had already got to that conclusion in a related thread. My reply to Randomguy was to understand his comment - sometimes people comment thinking what they write is obvious, when it isn't.
