WD My Passport not recognized

Post by helmar »

OK. Before you tell me to do my research I have read hundreds of reports of this very same problem. No solution so far, either on Linux or Windows

This external HD (Western Digital My Passport) is not recognized in both OS. I thought I could solve this on Linux but it seems quite worse since I can't even see the device. On Windows the device appears in Device Manager but I can't assign a letter to the drive to access it. It seems to be an MBR problem that could be easily solved using "Fixboot" or "bootrec" commands but I can't do it without the letter of the unit.

I'm a Linux enthusiast for more than 10 years but I'm not a tech person.
In Gparted this disk is not shown. Lsusb shows the device but I can't figure out what should I do in order to recover the access to this external HD.

Yes, there are thousands of people who've had the same problem, but in windows, all the solutions suggested didn't solve this problem for me.

Any suggestions?

Change the drive cable.
Change the usb port.
Change the computer.
Does it show in

Code: Select all

 sudo fdisk -l;lsusb
If it doesn't show, I am afraid, it may have crashed.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help.

OK. Thanks for your help.

The fdisk -l doesn't show the disk

That means the drive isn't dead. You can try changing cables.
Good luck

Wild guess has WD SmartWare software something to do with that.
WD SmartWare software uses your password to electronically lock and unlock your drive.
Perhaps you have to unlock your drive using the WD SmartWare Drive Unlock utility (Windows)

Good luck
Deepakdeshp. This HD has a different cable (at least here in Brazil is rarely seen). A double connector at the HD port. So I couldn't find another cable to test it.
But before discarding any other problem I have read some posts that report this problem as an MBR problem.
I'll keep looking for an alternative cable and digging for more answers.
THanks

I installed this software on Windows. It shows the Device with a red mark that says: "No recordable partition was found"
It is just like if the Windows couldn't mount the partition.
I don't think this is a cable issue.
To me, is more likely to be an initializing issue (MBR).

I have this drive hence I have seen the cable. MBR is used to boot. I had a Seagate 2TB drive with same cable and I had to throw it just after 6 months as it quit working.

Can you try it on another machine? This device does work with Mint, at least on my PC (UEFI). I nuked the drive, formatted with EXT4 so my Windows 10 dual-boot couldn't mess with it.

How to unlock `WD My Passport Drive` on Linux

By default WD My Passport Drive supports only Windows and OS X. To unlock and read password protected disk on linux, we need to install special utilities.
The rest of this post is copied from there: I'd be tempted to zero-fill the thing with "dd" and start fresh.
Get utils for WD My Passport Drive
Install required packages:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install python-pip python-dev lsscsi

Install py_sg library:

Code: Select all

sudo pip install py_sg

Download wd utils to your home directory:

Code: Select all

cd ~; wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/evox95/wdpassport-utils/master/wdpassport-utils.py

Unlock WD My Passport Drive

Plug in your password protected drive.
Run in terminal this command and enter password:
Shell

Code: Select all

~/wdpassport-utils.py -u
Change/create/remove password on WD My Passport Drive

Plug in your drive.
Run in terminal this command and enter password:

Code: Select all

~/wdpassport-utils.py -c
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
Your data and OS are backed up....right?

Hi Flemur.

That was a valuable help. However, it didn't work.

Code: Select all

That makes me think that is really a cable problem or some other physical problem, not logical.

I will try to find another cable to test it.
Any further suggestions will be welcome.

It would be useful to run

Code: Select all

dmesg
right after you plug it in to look for error messages or any other info for that matter.
