You can't make changes to a partition while it's mounted, and sda6 is mounted. So you should use GParted from a live medium (DVD or USB stick), not from the installed system.

Backup your data before you attempt it.

Sure you can as long as it's only extending the partition, i.e. moving the right boundary. You can also do it via the pre-installed Disks tool (not a fan of GParted myself).

Then do you have any theories about why it would not work in this case?

Dunno, in the screenshot OP has got the wrong partition selected, so might be as simple as that.

That's what I would do, but apparently that is not always necessary.
It could be that you simply selected the wrong partition: not the one you wanted to enlarge, but the empty (unallocated) space next to it. Can you check and see whether that is the case?

Edit: Oops, just noticed that you have ntfs on a primary partition, and / in the extended partition. As mentioned before you'll need to use gparted from a live dvd/usb, since your Linux build lives within the the extended partition and things need to be unmounted in order to make the change.

------
It's been awhile since I ran into the same/similar problem, so my memory may be foggy on how to solve this.

Because sda6 is inside the extended partition, you would need to make sure to unmount sda6, sda5, and THEN unmount sda2 (your extended partition), if they're not already unmounted. You should then be able to resize sda6 to include the unallocated space.
