The SOUND of my computer.

Post by carum carvi »

There are certain things that often go unnoticed but DO matter. As much as I can rely on certain programs to monitor the well being of my computer, there is unmistakingbly 1 factor that isnt often discussed: how does my computer SOUND?

The sound of my computer is often more of a DIRECT indication that my computer is working hard or struggling than any other system monitoring program can tell me. I can HEAR when it is struggling. The fans wheezing loud is such a sign. I know instantly, ok these videos are really putting my computer to work, but there is no real problem, because I recognize that specific fan sound.

It becomes worrying though when I DONT recognize the sound. More than any other monitoring program, weird sounds are instantly triggering alarm bells.

Recently purchased a secondhand Thinkpad T430 and I am still getting accustomed to the speficic sounds it makes. It ís humming quietly right now. The linux mint forum is to his liking...

Anyone remember the comforting or DIScomforting sounds when dialing in with a modem during the nineties? One could hear instantly that a connection failed or succeeded. One can hear instantly (even over a phone) if a dear family member is in need or entirely happy. BMW car manufacturers have a dedicated specialist whose only job is to determine HOW a certain sound of a door getting closed reassures or discomforts a BMW driver.

I only want to state that SOUND does matter. And I am curious how other Linux Mint users judge their Linux driven computer solely by the SOUND it makes...

If I can hear it, there is something wrong! The only computer that I can hear is my file server, and that is because of the fans I have installed to make sure that it does not get too hot in its (relatively) sealed box.

Great thread about an often overlooked subject. Although my computer is dead silent, I built it that way on purpose by choosing a particular case and particular fans based on their noise ratings, not everyone is as fortunate as I am.

I hope that this thread lives a long life so that everyone can become aware of the excellent subject brought up by the OP.

My old dual core AMD Athlon 64 just makes a constant and steady refreshingly light whoosh of air. Even the graphics card never gets annoying.

My 2007 Hyundai constantly reminds me to trade her in, which I always ignore.
