[solved] why does computer:/// show no information?

Post by elmarts » Thu Jun 20, 2019 5:19 pm

On the Mate desktop, clicking the computer icon, opens a window with the location of "computer:///" - this location shows all my drives OK, but no info on size, type or date modified. Why not?

Because unlike Windows which labels a partition as a drive (C:\) a drive in Linux is a physical object (HDD, SSD, etc) which may contain many partitions.

That is the top level of the Caja file manager screen, showing the active drive listings. You will need to click an item on the left navigation pane to show the folders and file listing in that location.

Hit Ctrl-2 to switch to list format.

it is in list format - but why are there columns there if they never show any information? Yes, I can see what is there if I click on each drive. That is not the question.

Are you talking about the items in the left hand pane under Computer?

I misunderstood your question, I thought you had started caja in it's default mode and only saw icons.
The first two posts had better answers. I'll just add that your hard drives themselves aren't mounts so there is nothing to show, you can see info for the mounts that are within the hard drive.

No - the right hand panel under the computer icon. I see columns labeled name, size, type, date modified and owner. Only the name is displayed, All the other columns are blank or say "unknown"

None of the columns in a List view would make any sense since the things displayed are devices.

Since this has already been answered why not open Caja, select View, and change it from List to Icons. The problem such that it is goes away.
Please add a [SOLVED] at the end of your original subject header if your question has been answered and solved.
