Canon MG6120 won't print pictures (Solved) Workaround

Post by farkas »

Linux Mint 19.1 Cinnamon installed.
My Canon Pixma MG6120 printer/scanner will scan and print text and pdf files.
The problem is it won't print pictures. No matter which application (Gimp, Image Viewer, etc.) I try when I"m trying print pictures the notification says its printing, then printing completed. Nothing happens with the printer. Printer goes into sleep mode.

Tried using Setting>Printers>Help>Troubleshoot, no help.

Previously I got a solution for a different printer with help from brian_p. Thank you!
viewtopic.php?f=51&t=290072&p=1607780#p1607780
That was a solution for UFR-II printers

Canon website https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/port ... me/support doesn't have a driver for MG6120 printers.

Found two linux drivers
https://canon-print.com/canon-printer-p ... 0-drivers/
Linux IJ Print Driver_mg5100.tar
https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consume ... =&os=linux
MG6100series-printer_driver.tar

Extracted both of them
Tried to install both.
Canon5100/cnijfilter-mg5100series-3.40-1-deb
MG6100series-printer_driver/cnijfilter-mg6100series-3.40-1-deb.tar.gz
Screenshot from 2019-06-18 01-01-41.png
but I get the same error with both installs. What should I try next?

Thanks for your reply Brian!
Your reply pointed me in the right direction.
Following https://wiki.debian.org/PrintQueuesCUPS#canon, and searching for
cnijfilter debian 5.70 led me to:
http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/201 ... -04-18-10/.

There is a large list of Canon IJ printer/scanner drivers.
The instructions are clear and easy to follow.
Used it install a driver for my printer. Currently using Simple Scan, will install scanner driver later on.

My printer can print again! :D
Had to order more ink. :(
Will see what kind results I'll get. A work in progress.
Will make a new follow up post after the ink arrives.

FYI
https://canonscannerdrivers.com/2018/03 ... ers-linux/
and
https://www.canon.co.uk/support/consume ... =&os=linux
download the same file.
Thanks again!
Farkas.

Got ink.
It turns out that my earlier celebration was a bit premature. :(
Tried on my desktop and laptop with USB connection, identical results.
Test page prints OK. Text files on plain paper no problem. :|
Printing photo quality prints is a little more problematic. :?
It will not print from:
1. Gimp, nothing happens.
2. Pix, printer wakes up and says job complete but no print.
3. Photo Print, nothing.

It will print from:
Image Viewer but the resolution is limited to 600x600 DPI. Not quite photo quality. :(

I could live with using Image Viewer to print pictures and using another app to edit my photo files.
Is there a way to increase the print resolution?
The Pixma MG6120 is capable of up to 9600x2400 DPI. The specs are here
https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/port ... xma-mg6120

I bought this printer many moons ago when I was using Win XP on a Dell desktop with a 64 bit dual core Pentium. I printed a many photo quality prints with it. Unfortunately Canon doesn't have linux driver support for it.
Here is a screen shot of it's current properties.

I hope there is way to resolve this issue. :)
All ideas and suggestions are welcome!
Thank you!

Re: Canon MG6120 won't print pictures (Workaround)

Post by farkas »

Figured out a workaround to my problem. :D
Not very elegant, it works but it relies on using Win 7.

Previously installed VirtualBox and Win7 from https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/m ... tools/vms/.
Downloaded and installed Win7 drivers in Vbox Win7 for my printer from https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/port ... me/support.
Also downloaded applications from their software menu.
I edit my pictures in Mint and copy them to the Vbox shared folder and print from there.

Until a better solution comes along, using linux only, I'll have to use this workaround. If you know of an application that allows for selecting print resolution using my workaround I'd like to hear from you.

If somebody has a more elegant solution, a new idea or a how to I will welcome it! :D

Thank you for listening! :)

Try here.
I think your printer has the same connectivity as mine.
