Linux Mint says that my docx and Excel files does not exist [SOLVED]
Hi there
Thanks for letting me in.
I have a horrible problem, and I really hope you can help me:
I have all Excel and Word (docx) files on a separate internal HDD. When I try to open the files with Linux Mint 19.1. Cinnamon, I get the error message, that they do not exist, but they do exist, as I can see them with nemo.
PDFs and images open fine so I think it is not a matter of rights.
I really hope you can help me.
Best regards,
Hanne,
Denmark

Hi,
Have you got LibreOffice or WPS or another program that can open MS Office files?

Re: Linuxx Mint says that my docx and Excel files does not exist
Easiest way is to right click on the excel/word doco's and select open with...
If you have libreoffice installed just select Libreoffice Writer for docx files and libreoffice Calc for excel files.
If you don't have libreoffice installed then go to their website and install the latest version.
Good luck.

Re: Linuxx Mint says that my docx and Excel files does not exist
Maybe the problem is another kind:
When I look at the file system with nemo (also sudo nemo) I have all the files from windows in /media/hanne/fra Windows.
When I look with the terminal (which I'm not very good at) I can only come to media/hanne and the underlaying foldes are not there, meaning there is nothing called "fra Windows" which I can see with command media/hanne ls -a It is completely empty.

No as far as I know they are not shared (meaning that I have not done anything to share them.)
I tried your tip with the USB stick and both on the USB stick and on the final destination under Documents I get the message that the file does not exist - but it has 481 K...
It is so strange because images ad PDFs can be opened. It is "just" Excel and Word (docx) that cannot.
I am crying over this

Re: Linux Mint says that my docx and Excel files does not exist
You did it exactly right. Now I need you to do the same with the following command:
Code: Select all
cat /etc/fstab

Re: Linux Mint says that my docx and Excel files does not exist
Hanne, copy the following command and paste it into a terminal
Then navigate to the /mnt folder and try to open your files. If it works, we can do a permanent solution.
Code: Select all
sudo mount -t ntfs-3g -o defaults,noatime,utf8,umask=000,uid=1000,gid=1000 /dev/sdc1 /mnt

Re: Linux Mint says that my docx and Excel files does not exist
I am so happy to read, what you write!
I tried your command and got this result
I have earlier tried to access the mounted drive (my 1 TB internal backup drive with the 47.000 files. Maybe I do something wrong but I get this result meaning the drive is totally empty - but it is not! Or I should be more specific: none of the internal drives are shown at all.

Mount is denied because the NTFS volume is already exclusively opened.
The volume may be already mounted, or another software may use it which
could be identified for example by the help of the 'fuser' command.

Hanne, I forgot to have you do the following command in the terminal first:
then rerun the last command I gave you.
Is that drive you are trying to mount formatted as VFAT or NTFS?
Code: Select all
umount sdc1

The new command you have me returns in Danish something like: "umount: sdc1: No such file or catalogue of files" (I hope it makes sense.)
The drive we are trying to mount is formatted as FAT (32 bit version). But I have the feeling it is already mounted which I have done GUI Disks function. When I look there it says "Mounted on /mnt/8208-614F"

OK Hanne, Go into the Disks GUI, select the drive and partition to unmount, and click on the first box under the VOLUMES (it should show "unmount") then run
Code: Select all
sudo mount -t vfat -o defaults,noatime,utf8,umask=000,uid=1000,gid=1000 /dev/sdc1 /mnt

Sorry for the delay but I did not get an e-mail.
I have done so. There were no errors. Should I run any other commands as well?
