[SOLVED] kernel updates - error messages

Post by elmarts » Mon Jul 15, 2019 12:52 pm

Booting with grub into mint 19.1 I was using an older kernal (4.15.0-47-generic), and tried to update to the new 4.5 series kernal with ukuu. That resulted in a very unhappy system, with jerky mouse lagging reactions to command inputs, etc. So I tried to revert to the latest of the 4.15 series (4.15.18-041518-generic). I got my system back, but during the boot before the login window there was a series of error messages, one of which said something about acpi not found, and 1 table not loaded (or something like that). Questions: are the boot errors logged somewhere and where can I find them? I will post those errors and ask about them when I find out how to capture the error messages. thanks.

Can't find a log, but the first line of the 3 lines of error start with "namespace lookup failure" -

When I boot the system, the kernel gives some errors. But the system works flawlessly and I just ignore these errors.
If I have helped you solve a problem, please add [SOLVED] to your first post title, it helps other users looking for help, and keeps the forum clean.

How about you use a supported kernel instead of installing super-outdated testing kernels via ukuu? Those kernels you are installing went end-of-life a year ago.

Update Manager > View > Linux kernels for all your kernel needs.

PS: But to actually answer your question: /var/log/kern.log
Tune up your LM 19.x: ppa:gm10/linuxmint-tools

Because using a 5 series kernel borks my system while 4.15.0-54-generic at least lets it run OK?

That worked - here is the error:

4.15.0-54-generic is Mint's current default kernel and not anything you'd need Ukuu for. It is perfectly up to date. On the other hand, the kernel you explicitly mentioned in the OP (4.15.18-041518-generic) is an unsupported test kernel that's long outdated.

That shouldn't be a problem, but go look for a BIOS update that might fix this.
