in the settings you can change which version of proton to use
to get skyrim to play for example i had to use the combo box to change the version of my proton to something like three point two
and skyrim worked after that
good luck

it is sad that skyrim was not working with newest versions of proton

to change the version of proton its in the settings under steam play in steam

again good luck

Double check the settings in Steam. You have to opt in to Proton Beta Program, and then after it updates with a restart, you have to check the box Run Windows games in Linux. And then i believe you have to restart it again.

Proton was released a while ago, it's not in beta anymore.
Tune up your LM 19.x: ppa:gm10/linuxmint-tools

I checked my settings in Steam. Go to Settings-->Steam Play - There will be a box to check "Enable Steam Play for all other Tiltles". Run other titles with 4.11-2 (is what i am using). You can also right click the game and scroll down to properties for more options. You have to be an advanced user for one option so do some research on any specific game. You can always undo what you did if you get bad information from someone.
