[SOLVED] Unable to get Wireless Connection

Post by reyas12 »

Alright, so I've been trying to get my wireless wifi connection to work for Linux Mint - Cinnamon. I'll put as many links to all the stuff I've tried to get my WiFi to work, right after the information box. Any help would be appreciated. I'm completely clueless as to why nothing is working.

Alright, now onto all the steps I've tried! To get the Linux Mint onto my computer, I followed this video. The only thing I didn't do is the part where he shrinks the storage, and where he does the steps for dual booting. I just went ahead and erased the windows software that was on my computer. Next, I start playing around with the themes, and then I notice my wifi isn't working. So then I went through so, so, so many links just trying to fix this part. I'll try to link all of them here:
https://youtu.be/YSaFGfQo0ns
https://youtu.be/vr31Z8TzPhs
https://www.ghacks.net/2015/03/27/how-t ... tallation/
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... html#ID1.2

and I can't even find the rest of the links. For some reason the google search bar on my phone doesn't record links I've opened up. When doing the last link in the steps, it did this:
Image

The top part is no longer available, and instead greyed out. Before I mess anything else up, I wanted to come to the forums before I absolutely lose my mind.

Re: Unable to get Wireless Connection

Post by HAWR »

Hello reyas12,

in your system overview theres is no driver listed for your broadcom wireless device
driver: N/A
, so it seems, that the installed driver is not the right one.

Have you tried the second solution on this site with the b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer?

Hello reyas12,

First one more question: The command on easylinuxtips consists of both lines. The first part in the first line is for deinstalling/purging the bcmwl-kernel-source and after that the new one will be installed. In your post, there is only the second part of the command visible.

Re: Unable to get Wireless Connection

Post by HAWR »

Hello reyas12,

thank you for updating the command. Have you than removed the ethernet cable and rebooted your computer to see if it works now?

There are several things to do:

1) Have a look at:
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 493 not upgraded.
For me it seems, that you haven't updated your system for longer time or never until installing LM. Please run the following commands in the terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
2) You should update the kernel from 4.15.20-0 (install version) to the recent 4.15.55-0 version. This can be done in the update manager: view > linux kernel. In help you find a hort description for kernel updates.

3) Your nvidia card is designed for notebooks, but you have a desktop. I don't know if that works???, but the latest driver for your card is from the 418-series. Maybe it is useful to update to a newer version, when 1) and 2) are done and the wifi problem is solved.

Re: Unable to get Wireless Connection

I'm writing as it's happening. I tried the first code and got this:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
[sudo] password for orenda:
Ign:1 http://packages.linuxmint.com tessa InRelease
Hit:2 http://packages.linuxmint.com tessa Release
Get:4 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-security InRelease [88.7 kB]
Hit:5 http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu bionic InRelease
Hit:6 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic InRelease
Get:7 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-updates InRelease [88.7 kB]
Get:8 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-backports InRelease [74.6 kB]
Fetched 252 kB in 4s (66.4 kB/s)
Reading package lists... Done
Then I did the second command you posted, which basically listed all the files that are going to be updated, to which I agreed for them to be updated. Here's the list anyways, with my command reply:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done

and it just keeps repeating the same thing like 10 times. From what I can tell, it is a repeated script. And then after the repeated script, this pops up:

I tried the first code again and got something different this time:

You might want to run 'apt --fix-broken install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libgstreamer-gl1.0-0 : Depends: libgstreamer1.0-0 (>= 1.14.4) but 1.14.1-1~ubuntu18.04.1 is installed
 libwebkit2gtk-4.0-37 : Depends: libjavascriptcoregtk-4.0-18 (= 2.24.2-0ubuntu0.18.04.1) but 2.22.4-0ubuntu0.18.04.1 is installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt --fix-broken install' with no packages (or specify a solution).

I'll go ahead and try the second step you listed. I have an all-in-one HP desktop, if that helps at all. I don't know if my granpda ever updated this thing, but I figured I'd recycle it and put Linux Mint on it. And to answer your first question, yes I removed the ethernet cable and then rebooted the computer. I did your second step, but it said something about an error in the gconfig2 dependency. And I have no absolute idea what that means.

Hello reyas12,

you should run the recommended command first to solve the errors and then proceeding with the kernel update:

Code: Select all

apt --fix-broken install

Use the update manager to install updates, you will have to run it twice, then reboot, go into BIOS/UEFI settings and disable Secure Boot, then if wifi doesnt work

Code: Select all

sudo apt install --reinstall bcmwl-kernel-source
Reboot

I went into the settings, and then changed the Secure Boot to disabled. When I tried to log-in to my desktop, It couldn't find the linux mint cinnamon software, and I worried I had a dead computer for a second, until I remembered the software was still on my USB. I grabbed it, restarted up the desktop, and luckily I could re-install Linux Mint. Secure Boost is still off, and everything is working now - I have wireless connection. Thank you so much for dealing with my newbie brain!!! I appreciate all the help!
