Linux installation always restarts [Solved]

Post by Apollo_richard »

I have linux mint on a 16gb SanDisk
I am trying to use this as a alternative to Windows 8.1 bing
My laptop is a Acer r3 131t c28s
Is has a internal hard drive of 32gb

The problem that I now I have is that when ever I try to install linux, it always goes back to the grub menu and I have to start over again. I've tried this like 5 times looking up videos to help but with no help

Have you removed Windows from this notebook? If not, I'm afraid you can't install any version of Mint other than possibly XFCE. You simply don't have enough storage space.

Every time I go through the prosses of installing linux I always chose the option to wipe the disk but don't know if it really deleted Windows.
If I can't install linux on my laptop do you know if there is a way to go back to Windows?

Looks like Mint installer did wipe the SSD and setup /EFI and / partitions, so I would say Win8 is gone.

That laptop comes with UEFI, so you will need to disable secure boot in UEFI and see if GRUB will boot. If not, most likely easier to re-install instead for doing a GRUB repair.

What if I already have the secure boot disable?
And when I turn of my laptop I get an error saying
Fails to remove key or something like that, it passes too fast ?
Here's how my bios settings looks like

There was a post earlier about an Acer laptop and inability to properly boot after Mint installation. Turns out this Acer UEFI with secure boot disabled still required a secure boot key, which is asinine. Basically, you can install Mint with secure boot disabled but secure boot will not allow booting without importing Mint EFI key.

You will need to access UEFI and import the Ubuntu (Mint) key from the EFI partition into the secure boot allowable key list. Here is link to original article, follow steps 35-42 to import EFI key. You may need to rearrange the boot order to move up Ubuntu (Mint) in boot sequence.

Should be EMMC, I think USB0 is the USB port.

Ok so I followed all of the steps and have this
7. Efi file boot 0: grubx64efi
Should I move it up?
And the only way I was able to edit secure boot mode was by enabling secure boot. Should I disable it again?
My boot order
1.usd hdd SanDisk
2.emmc: hbg4e 32g
3. Usb fwd
4. Network boot-ipv4
5. Usb cdrom
6. Network boot-ipv6
7. Efi file boot 0: grubx64efi

Yes, grubx64efi is the GRUB/boot loader and should be the 2nd choice after USB HDD. Then you can boot from USB without having to change boot order.

Your choice, once the Mint efi key is in the secure boot allowable key list, you can boot with secure boot enabled.

Seems like it didn't work
I tried booting from usb hhd and did the whole prosses of installing linux but instead of ejecting the usb it puts me back the the gnu grub menu
And I also tried booting from efi file but got the same result.
And I get this error
"wlp2s0: failed to remove key (1, ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff) from hardware (-22)"

You did not have to re-install Mint after importing the EFI key, looks like you were back where you were before. The EFI key created by the new Mint installation is not the same as the previous EFI key.

Please disable secure boot, re-install Mint with the Wipe HDD option, enable secure boot, re-import EFI key and see if you can boot into GRUB after installation.

Also found this on the error message "wlp2s0: failed to remove key (1, ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff) from hardware (-22)". Error may be independent of the GRUB/EFI issue.

Edit: also, please try to boot GRUB with secure boot enabled and disabled. Acer UEFI implementation is especially bad and cannot assume anything.

Errors messages are from UEFI not being able to find GRUB boot files, just ignore or move grub item lower on the boot order. Not a big deal as long as you can boot from liveUSB and install Mint.

Nothing to be sorry about, that is why we are here.

So I re installed mint and wipe the hhd. And now I'm at the bios seting and enabled the secure boot.
What if the efi file is already there and I can't re-inport it?

The new EFI key should be different or will overwrite the old key. If you want to clear the EFI key, there should be an option to clear keys.

Please reboot and make sure everything works like it should.

Please edit and add [Solved] to subject line of the first post if all are OK.

10 minutes is a bit too long. This could be caused by several issues, need more information.

Please copy and paste below command and run in Terminal to output system information. Copy the output from terminal, click </> icon at top of reply window and paste contents between <> symbols.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
That is INXI -FXZ all but F in lower case if you are typing.
