Mint Update Missing Level Column

Post by noahsark9723 »

I am writing to see if anyone knows why the Level column is missing in the new 19.2 mint update manager?

https://guyfromit.blogspot.com/2014/01/ ... evels.html

I liked the level description because I normally installed all updates and made backups in timeshift before installing a level 3 or higher.

Could if be that it was just overlooked or has it been phased out for some reason?

Any info on this would be appreciated...

It's been removed. More info on "New features in Linux Mint 19.2".

You can still use apt-mark:

I liked the Levels for what they were, but I think some people misinterpreted their intent, causing some security/kernel updates to never be applied, and hence their absence in LM 19.2 and beyond. C'est la vie.

Keep backups. Stay updated. Carry on.

I too miss the Level Column. I thought the whole idea about Linux was giving control to the user.
Now I have lost the control over what level of updates are going onto my system and when. What's next?
Forced updates like Windows?

You can still go through the list of updates and uncheck anything you dont want installed, you can even add updates to the blacklist so they never update

Thanks JeremyB for the quick reply. I saw the other 2 options you mention and they were there before.
I was wondering if there is a way to make a request to the Mint developers to have the "Level" column re-instated as an option as it was before?

Request away, but your chances of that happening are close to zero I should think.

Regarding the reasoning for the removal of levels, I think karlchen had explained it better than I ever did: viewtopic.php?p=1610045#p1610045
