Epson Stylus Photo PX700W scanner not detected over Wifi

Post by stonelaughter »

Hi All!

I have recently downloaded and installed all the drivers and software for my printer, and managed to navigate the printer setup world and get it printing! Yay! (I'm pretty new to Linux).

However; it's an "All in One" and the Epson Scan software doesn't detect the scanner over WiFi - and I can't find anywhere to configure the system to look there for one. So: I'm having to run a cable which means I now have a wireless AND a USB printer listed which irritates my autism/OCD; but I can at least now scan.

Is there a way to add a WiFi scanner so that Mint just recognises it, and allows the Epson ImageScan software to use it?

I'm using X64 Mint 19.2 (Cinnamon) on an old "PC Specialist UK" Core i5 Laptop.

Using your MFD via a wireless connection entails setting up the network connection between your MFD and your router as well as editing 2 configuration files in Linux Mint.
Ensure that the firewall is OFF.

On your PX700W configuration screen go to Network Settings, Wireless LAN Setup. Click on Setup Wizard which should list your modem/router. Enter the identification code of your router which you will find on its underside. When completed click on "Done". Next, you can check the Network Connection and print its result for reference when editing the configuration files.

The method for the configuration files to be edited is described here (print it out for easy reference): viewtopic.php?f=42&t=225289

The essential network file from the Epson Download Centre is: iscan-bundle-1.0.4.x64.debwhich you can install either as a bundle with the included instructions or by opening the bundle and installing the components individually in this order: data, core, iscan-network-nt (in plugins).

iscan-bundle-1.0.4.x64.deb puts its SANE backends in /usr/lib/sane. This would be ok except for the fact that Mint 19 has a bug which leads to this directory not being seached and a scanner is not discovered. One solution is to copy the the three files in /usr/lib/sane to /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane.

Thanks Brian; I already did all the stuff in the previous reply so yours is I think where my problem lies. I'm away from home at the moment and seeing my kids; I have TeamViewer but the MFD is off LOL. When I get back, Sunday, I'll have a go at what you suggest.

BTW - does the firewall need to be off? That's the one thing I did not even think of.

Would sudo ln -sfr /usr/lib/sane/libsane-epkowa* /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/sane be sufficient?

Your suggestion is the better one. Mine is the quick, lazy one that should work with an Epson device and iscan-bundle but is likely to fail with scanning packages from other vendors such as Lexmark. Copying the files for a Brother and Samsung device also solves the same problem and involves the user in little work. However, linking is more a more general and elegant solution.

OK so I tried. I really did. but the following instruction is extremely ambiguous and despite doing everything you guys said, it's still not detecting my scanner, firewall on or off.

Code: Select all

First, install "iscan-network-nt" from the Epson Download Centre (this comes as part of the Scanner Download Bundle). To enable Wi-Fi for Epson devices you have to edit two configuration files on your system - dll.conf and epkowa.conf.

sudo nano /etc/sane.d/dll.conf

Observing the alphabetical order, insert the following 2 entries:

net
epkowa
When I did the above, "net" already appears at the top. I inserted "epkowa" in between "epjitsu" and "#epson" (observing the alphabetical order).

However due to the ambiguity of the instruction above I have no idea whether I got the intended resulting file contents.

Here's the top page of the file; please let me know if this is adequate to the task. The rest of the instructions I have followed without difficulty; instead of copying the files from one folder to the other I did the method which kyphi suggested.

Is it as simple as needing to reboot after doing all this?

Code: Select all

  GNU nano 2.9.3 /etc/sane.d/dll.conf

# dll.conf - Configuration file for the SANE dynamic backend loader
#
# Backends can also be enabled by configuration snippets under the dll.d/
# directory -- third party backends can drop their configuration file in
# this in this directory, named after the backend.
#
# The next line enables the network backend; comment it out if you don't
# need to use a remote SANE scanner over the network -- see sane-net(5)
# and saned(8) for details.

There are 2 files to be edited. I gather that you have successfully edited "/etc/sane.d/dll.conf" (please check that your changes have been saved).

The other file that has to be edited is "/etc/sane.d/epkowa.conf" as described here viewtopic.php?f=42&t=225289

What is it that you find ambiguous and confusing?

I edited the epkowa.conf; that one was easy.

The ambiguous and confusing part was the bit where it says you have to put the two entries in, observing alphabetical order. It doesn't say WHERE to put in "net" and WHERE to put in "epkowa".

"net" was already in there but completely out of alphabetical order, right at the top. Does it need putting in somewhere else as well? Does it go WITH the "epkowa" line?

The instructions are completely unclear to an autistic person; you have to be precise and accurate to the nth degree. Sorry.

BTW I added the following to epkowa.conf (usb and scsi were already there):

usb
scsi
net 192.168.0.25 1865

per the instructions. Even those instructions weren't clear that "1865" was the correct number to add; the writer seemed unsure?

If "net" was already mentioned then there was no need to add it again. You add it if it is not present on your system.
You will notice, when looking at the dll.conf file, that the listed files are in alphabetical order. Any additions are made adhering to this order so that if it should ever occur that you no longer use an Epson Stylus PX700W device, you can undo your alterations - knowing where to find the entries you have made is called good housekeeping.

The number "1865" after the IP address is specified in the installation instructions provided by Seiko-Epson.

I am cautious to advise that things MUST be in a certain way. Hence my use of "say". I am sorry that this caused uncertainty for you.

If you have followed all the instructions you were given and have made the changes to the dll.conf and epkowa.conf files, ensured that the firewall is "off" and used the redirection code, you should now be able to scan via wifi. You do need to disconnect the USB cable - the PX700W can only follow one setting at a time.

Thanks Kyphi. When I get back home (away again) I will uninstall everything and do it all again in the order you list it. Then we'll see!

I have an all-in-one Epson printer/scanner as well. I could not get the system to detect it wirelessly, no matter what I did. I spent many frustrating days working on the problem to no avail. Then today, I stumbled on this thread, which looks quite complicated, but there was one comment which I decided to try...MAKE SURE THAT YOUR FIREWALL IS OFF! What do you know! My computer suddenly detects my scanner with no problem. Now all I have to do is figure out how I can have my firewall ON and still have access to my scanner. Giving credit where credit is due, I think Kyphi was the individual who made the suggestion, back in 2011.
