Repeated loss of internet connection in Mint 19.1

Post by Blindmanbilly » Fri Aug 23, 2019 2:26 pm

For he last two weeks I have been faced with never knowing if I will be able to connect to the internet via WIFI on my computers. I have restored from TimeShift repeatedly. The extra frustration now is I must restore an older TimeShift as time goes on. When the issue first appeared it seemed like the last update may have been the cause. Now I have gone back 5 issues of TimeShift to finally get an Internet connection. These computers are all dual boot so I have reluctantly booted my previous OS to verify that my hardware is still functional.
Here is my inxi -Fxz Detail
Any help will be sincerely appreciated

Interesting - I thought I was having an only-me issue. I also run 19.1. The frequent and most annoying connection interrupts began 3 or 4 weeks ago, went on for maybe 2 weeks despite everything I could think of to remedy matters, and then disappeared. I am now getting none, and can only hope that whatever it was is gone.

Came across this while browsing the forum - and it rang a bell.

I'm also running Mint 19.1 and like Marty Feldman, I have been suffering internet connection dropouts over recent weeks. Like him I thought I was the only victim. My daily-use computer is a Samsung laptop, my connection is via a Netgear router, and I have the option of both wired (ethernet) and wifi connection to the router. I often found the popup appearing inviting me to (re)enter the WPA passcode in order to (re)connect.

I did not try to troubleshoot - I just put up with the inconvenience. Like marty, I have found that over the past week or so the problem has been much less frequent.

I did however notice that none of the other computers in the house (my wife's Win7 laptop, and my other computers which have Mint 18.3, MX Linux, and PCLinux OS) was suffering the same problem. That indicates that the router, and my ISP, are both working well.

Does this mean that there was - or still is - some issue with 19.1 and the way it connects to the internet? The timing of these experiences does rather suggest that one or more of the 19.1 updates of a few weeks back may have something to do with the problem...

Same here. When I was experiencing the frequent wifi interrupts, my wife's computer (desktop running Win10) soldiered on flawlessly.

I might add that although the interrupts on my computer seem to have now stopped, clicking on my "Wireless Connection" icon at the lower right of my screen shows what I believe are significantly lower percentage figures than was the case before the trouble began - I presently am getting figures like 58%, or 65%.

Here is another anomaly.
I just tried to access my router 192.168.0.1 and it times out before a connection.
I can connect instantly on my tablet.
Does this make any ideas come to mind?
Also there are several similar posts in the "Network" section of this forum, did I post in the wrong area and could these be linked together?
