Mint 19.1 won't recognize 128GB microSDXC UHS-1 SD CARD

I need mint to see this card so I can use it with Timeshift (currently Mint only sees up to 64GB cards). Laptop is a 2019 Dell Inspiron 15 5000 series 5570 with 8th gen i7. Mint Kernel is 4.15.0-47-generic x86_64 bits. Has built-in SD card slot that accepts the micro SD via an adapter. Windows 10 sees the 128GB OK.

I'm hoping to get Mint to see up to a 256GB card.

Any wisdom will be appreciated.

Is the SD Card formatted to NTFS? if so check to see if ntfs-3g is installed or not you can do that through the Synaptic Package Manager

my 2c would be, that you are pushing the Limits of the Linux System.

ie: don't go by your experience with the Windows System, as that uses proprietary drivers.

wheras the Linux System uses the drivers that are inbuilt into the Linux Kernel,
as thus may not work on certain hardware.
- the thing is, that when using any Linux System, it does pay to be an bit conservative.

like on my win-10 based Lenovo 100s which has an 32Gb eMMC hardcard for it's main drive,
& so I've placed an 32Gb microSD card into that same micro-card reader - as the D: drive.
- - could have used an bigger sized microSD card, but wouldn't have pushed it past 64Gb, though.

I edited this post. I checked Synaptics SW Mgr and yes, ntfs-3g is installed, version 1:2017.3.23-2ubuntu0.18.04.2.

Mint Disks won't see the 128GB card at all.

I booted W10 and, after seeing the chasing dots of madness and remembering how much I hate windows, I found that the card had a 32 GB FAT32 partition with the remaining 89GB unformatted. So I deleted the 32GB FAT32 (because it just appeared to be "recovery" stuff put there by Sandisk), and reformatted the entire 128 GB card as NTFS. Mint Disks still won't see the card.

Unfortunately, Dell's documentation fails to indicate the max size card.

Any more ideas?

Pierre, Please see my edits above. I do appreciate the help. Because I have a lot of stuff on this Dell (a very nice laptop, BTW; has a 1TB WD HDD and I added a superfast M2 512 GB Samsung EVO for the OS) I'm having a hard time doing Timeshift backups to a 64GB card. Just too small. And since Timeshift won't use NTFS/FAT32, to backup to an external medium I need a dedicated card or USB for TS. But this laptop only has 3 USB so for scheduled BU, I prefer to use the SD card slot, as I rarely use it otherwise.

Might be relevant - got a lenovo T430 with a SD card slot in it. In the past have had a 256G SD card in there and linux had no problems with it. Can't remember, but probably reformatted it ext4. Now have 32G card from my camera. In the SD card slot mint will read it partially, gparted has problems with it and can't copy photos off it with nemo. Put same card in an SD to USB adaptor and put into one of the usb ports - no problems!! This was yesterday. No idea why but will try reformatting it. Note it is not a hardware problem with the laptop, I have more than one T430 and it is the same with the others.

So... if you have a SD to USB adaptor does it work that way?

Andy, Yes. I have two 128GB microSDXC cards, one formatted ext3/ext4, and the other NTFS (Mint properties doesn't say NTFS, it says "fuse" but I know it's NTFS because I just formatted it in W10). But if either 128GB card is in the SD card slot, Mint ignores them. Go figure.

I am a bit confused why Linux Mint 19.x should not be able to see and use an 128 GB microSDXC UHS-1 storage card.
I run my Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit and my Ubuntu Mate 18.04 64-bit from such a card. Plugged into the SD card slot.
Admittedly, Ubuntu 18.04 Mate is not 100% identical to Mint 19.x. But Mint 19.x is based on Ubuntu 18.04.
So I am a bit uncertain why it should not work.
Without intending to promote a particular brand: My card is a SanDisk ExtremePro SDXC UHS-1 card, size 128 GB.
And the notebook where it works is a Dell Latitude E5470 from 2016.

When I had booted the same machine from an AntiX 17.4.1 live system, this Antix live system could not be persuaded to see the SDXC device. Reason being that AntiX seems to be missing the needed kernel modules. But Ubuntu has supported the machine and the SDXC card since Ubuntu 14.04.5 (kernel 4.4.0-xx required).

The card I'm using is the same as yours, except it's not a "pro": SanDisk Extreme Plus microSDXC UHS-1 Card

I noticed that your Mint desktop is slightly earlier. Could that be it? Or is it running live? Next I think I'll try booting live and see what happens.

I just tried running Mint 19.1 64 bit Tessa live, but when booting an error message flashed by that said something like "error initializing SD card, error 110"

Any ideas?

My Mint 19.1 kernel is only so old (4.15.0-20), because I had to boot from the Mint 19.1 64-bit Cinnamon live & installation medium.
Reason:
On the Dell notebook no Mint 19.1 64-bit Cinnamon has been installed. Only Ubuntu 18.04 6-bit, on which Mint 19.1 64-bit is based.

Ubuntu 18.04.3 64-bit Mate runs the most recent kernel 4.15.0-58, and the SDXC card is still recognized and fully functional. So having an outdated kernel is no requirement.

Took the output of lsmod | egrep "mmc|rtsx", which we both had posted, sorted the output lines alphabetically to make comparing easier and found out this difference, which might be the crucial difference:
On my Dell notebook, the SDXC card reader is connected via PCI. On your Dell notebook, it its connected via USB.

At this point in time I do not have any real clue which additional kernel module might be needed in order to make Linux Mint 19.x on your Dell notebook recognize the SDXC card.
But there should be a way. Hopefully. (Because if Windows can, why should Linux not be able to do the same?)

As your Dell notebook seems to be pretty recent, I wonder whether the solution might be as simple as
+ launching Update Manager
+ going to View => Linux kernels
+ selecting the most recent kernel 5.0.0-xx for installation
+ installing it
+ rebooting

In case this kernel from series 5.0.0-xx should not solve the problem, but in case it should cause new problems, then reverting to 4.15.0-xx would be as simple as
+ rebooting
+ entering the Grub menu
+ in the Advanced submenu selecting the most recent 4.15.0-xx kernel
+ pressing <F10> to use it for booting
+ uninstalling kernel 5.0.0-xx again (through Update Manager)

Searching for Ubuntu 18.04 Dell notebook not recognizing SDXC card
Found hits. No warranty that the reported solutions will work on any Dell notebook, specifically on Inspiron-5570.

  The reported problems read much like yours. Yet the participants seem to put the blame on SanDisk.
  Whereas in the Askubuntu thread below the bad guy is the Realtek SD card driver.

  But read the whole thread yourself.

1. I tried all 3 links and either found no solution or one that is not suitable (i.e., using the sd to USB converter, please see item 2 below). However, I could have easily missed something

2. I have a Sony MRW68E USB multi card reader which will read the 128GB SDXC card. Problem with that is I'm still unable to use the built-in SD card reader (I like it because I can leave a card semi-permanently in it so Timeshift can do scheduled BU; it is mechanically safe from damage when I "encase" the laptop, unlike a USB reader which is likely to be broken).

3. The built-in SD reader will read a 64GB Sandisk Ultra Plus microSDXC UHS-1 card.

4. W10, on the same machine, is able to read the 128 GB card. But I HATE Windows.

5. I checked update manager and it recommends no kernel updates. I'm using Mint 19.1 kernel 4.15.0-47-generic x86_64 bits in my Dell 5570.

6. I did see one post that said this bug dates to 2011.

7. System log shows multiple errors "mmc0: error -110 whilst initialising SD card". The 128 GB card is plugged in when these errors are logged.

8. The Mint 19.1 Disk utility (gnome-disk-utility 3.28.3) will not see the 128 GB card, regardless of its format.

9. Just booted W10 and in Device Mgr found this about the SDXC card: Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader, Device type: Universal Serial Bus controllers, Manufacturer: Realtek Semiconductor Corp., Location: Port_#0006.Hub_#0001, Status: This device is working properly, Driver version: 10.0.16299.31241. From Windows Explorer Properties got this: SDXC Card, Driver 10.0.17134.1 by AVG Tech. (I have no idea why Device Mgr and Explorer give different driver versions and why AVG would be provide one of them. Also wonder why Mint System Info didn't identify Realtek as the card reader manuf., or that it is only USB 2.0.)

I think you are onto something with the observation that your Dell SD reader uses PCI while mine goes thru USB, but I have not been able to use that info to find a solution.

The SD card read will be what Windows device manager has displayed to you: Realtek USB 2.0 Card Reader, Driver version: 10.0.16299.31241.
The second driver which you have spotted from inside Explorer, Driver 10.0.17134.1 by AVG Tech, will be the specific driver in use to read the specific SDXC card which you had inserted.

This sentence seems interesting and maybe point to a limitation, currently applying to what Linux Mint (kernel, available Realtek USB card reader driver) can do:

But it will not read SDXC 128 GB.

Almost seems as if on Mint 19.1 the internal Realtek USB 2.0 card reader is limited to a maximum size of 64 GB.
As Windows, using the corresponding Windows version of the driver, can use SXDC 128 GB, the limit must somehow be built-in to either the Linux kernel or the Realtek driver.

I wonder whether you could use your Dell notebook serial number / support identifier in order to find out whether Dell offers some specific Ubuntu driver for your internal card reader.
I cannot do so for you with my Dell notebook serial number / support identifier, because the Dell support page will try to find something matching my machine type. But my card reader is connect via pci. So whatever I came up with would not be suitable for your USB card reader.

It might be that you will find nothing on the Dell support pages. It might be they only offer you something for Ubuntu 16.04, not 18.04. Reason: they seem to have sold the Inspiron 5570 with Ubuntu 16.04 per-installed, but not with 18.04. Nonetheless, if they can offer a special card driver software for 16.04, maybe this will give a hint what to look for on 18.04 (Mint 19.1). Maybe. (Hope dies last.)

The Dell support webpage only offers "Ubuntu 14.04" (Mint 17.x) as soon as it learn I use a Dell Latitude E5470. No Ubuntu drivers offered for anything sadly.

In case your system can be persuaded to load mmc_block, then it should be feasible to make it do so on every reboot by creating a file mmc_block.conf, which only holds the line mmc_block
In case the system refuses to load mmc_block, the next step should definitely not be done.

Command to create the file: sudoedit /etc/modules-load.d/mmc_block.conf
Put in precisely one line: mmc_block
Save the file and reboot.
Provided rebooting works correctly, insert the SXDC into the internal card reader slot.
Then execute lsmod | egrep "mmc|rtsx"
Also the output of dmesg will be interesting.
