[SOLVED] WiFi is connected but some websites can't connect.

Post by BMAS »

I just installed Linux Mint 19 on my HP Notebook because it could barely start up out of the box with Windows 10. So far it's much faster, dare I even say usable? I installed a Realtek wireless driver in order to connect to my WiFi. Now the WiFI is working, but most websites say there is no internet connection and fail to load. I can load some websites like YouTube on WiFi and even play HD videos, but not other. Those same websites will load if I connect with an Ethernet connection. I tried resetting the Wi-Fi connection and disabling the firewall, but no change. Can anyone help with this? Thanks in advance.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Do the same with the following four commands:

Code: Select all

rfkill list all

Code: Select all

iwconfig

Code: Select all

lsusb

Code: Select all

lspci

Try a change in antenna selection, because close-fisted HP is notorious for attaching just one antenna instead of two:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... k.html#ID2
(item 2)

Because you have an RTL8821CE chipset, replace rtl8723be by rtl8821ce in the terminal commands.

I tried to do that but ran into errors on the first step. Here's the output I got (I tried upper and lowercase in case it was case sensitive) :

Code: Select all

Input: sudo modprobe -r RTL8821CE
Output: modprobe: FATAL: Module RTL8821CE not found.
I tried the next step too, and got this response:

Code: Select all

Input: sudo modprobe rtl8821ce ant_sel=2
Output: modprobe: FATAL: Module rtl8821ce not found in directory /lib/modules/4.15.0-58-generic
Is it possible I have the wrong name for the module? How would I find out the actual name of the module being used?

Hi BMAS,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

Looks like you have not installed the Realtek RTL8821CE chipset drivers per #10 in the link below from member Pjotr's excellent website which you have to do before you can change antenna configuration. You may have to reboot (restart) after installing the WiFi drivers before it works.

Thanks for the response, I actually did that before coming to the forum. After I first installed Linux Mint, I couldn't see any WiFi networks at all and actually found the solution in that Ask Ubuntu link you added. To be safe, I tried it again, and this is the output I got:

Hi BMAS

You are welcome...

Anytime you see
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to acquire the dpkg frontend lock (/var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend), are you root?

That means you might have the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) or another console terminal window open and it should not be open at the same time and or you tried to run something that needs "sudo" in front of the command. You should not have the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) running while running console terminal installation commands and visa-versa or if the update manager is updating.
example:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install git dkms build-essential

Hope this helps ...

Hi BMAS

You have not said if your WiFi adapter is working and or working better now and if you were able to try the antenna selection options to see if that makes any difference? It does look like the appropriate Wifi drivers are now installed.

I am pretty sure you might have to run "modprobe".

Code: Select all

modprobe rtl8821ce
or

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe rtl8821ce
And FYI: If you want to make sure you have current drivers, you can follow the same procedures again, but make sure to delete the current driver folder before running the "git clone" command again.

Example: Note: the tilda "~" represents "/home/YourUserName/"

Code: Select all

sudo rm -r ~/rtl8821ce
On a side note, if you have not changed your local ISP connection's default DNS servers to those from a neutral secure and anonymous DNS provider like Cloudflare, then I would recommend that everyone do that as well which prevents your ISP and others from blocking websites and monitoring what you are doing or perhaps even "throttling" (slowing down) your Internet access.

Hope this helps ...

You can use following commands for reinstall.

Code: Select all

sudo dkms remove rtl8821ce/v5.5.2_34066.20190614 --all
rm -rf rtl8821ce
sudo apt-get install build-essential git dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r)
git clone https://github.com/tomaspinho/rtl8821ce
cd rtl8821ce
sudo ./dkms-install.sh
After this, You can create a configuration file with following command.

Code: Select all

/bin/bash -c 'echo "options 8821ce rtw_power_mgnt=0 rtw_enusbss=0" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/8821ce.conf'
Then reboot your PC.

Hi kelebek333,

Is "dkms remove" the same as "dkms uninstall" and is one better than the other?

What is this and what does it do, "rtw_enusbss=0"?

Hi BMAS,

The only other things I can recommend would be:

1. to remove all the currently installed versions of this driver using the instructions from kelebek333 and reinstall it.

Open a console terminal, type in, or copy & paste, each line below one by one: Click "Select All" above command, right click the highlighted command, select Copy (or Ctrl+Insert), click in the console terminal window, and right click paste ("Shift+Insert" or "Ctrl+Shift+v"), repeat for each command.

Code: Select all

sudo dkms remove rtl8821ce/v5.5.2_34066.20190614 --all

Code: Select all

rm -rf rtl8821ce

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install build-essential git dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r)

Code: Select all

git clone https://github.com/tomaspinho/rtl8821ce

Code: Select all

cd rtl8821ce

Code: Select all

sudo ./dkms-install.sh
2. Install Linux Kernel 4.18.xx (ex: 4.18.6) from the Mint update manager, and install these drivers for that because one comment in those links said that a person was not able to use Linux Kernel 4.15 which is unusual IMHO.

I did notice from the last results of iwconfig that the WiFi signal seemed stronger.

3. Contact forum member "JermeyB" and see what he has to say.

Hope this helps ...
