Graphics Driver Failure - nouveau?
Hi All,
After running "inxi -G" I get the following ...
Graphics: Card: NVIDIA GF114M [GeForce GTX 670M]
X.Org: 1.15.1 drivers: (unloaded: fbdev,vesa) FAILED: nouveau Resolution: 1920x1080@60.0hz, 1920x1080@60.0hz
GLX Renderer: Gallium 0.4 on NVCE GLX Version: 3.0 Mesa 10.1.3
Despite this, everything seems to load and run fine - with one exception - when I run a program that uses an in-process Qt web browser widget. The app fails, giving the following trace...
nouveau: kernel rejected pushbuf: No such file or directory
nouveau: ch0: krec 0 pushes 0 bufs 2 relocs 0
nouveau: ch0: buf 00000000 00000002 00000004 00000004 00000000
nouveau: ch0: buf 00000001 00000006 00000004 00000000 00000004
terminate called without an active exception
So clearly this is some sort of Nouveau driver problem - but that's where I hit the limits of my competence.
Can anyone suggest a possible remedy? Is it just a question of re-installing the display driver - and if so which one is recommended?
I really can't afford to lose this machine - so I need to be sure that I don't screw it up further.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hello, bardfast.
Could you perhaps post a complete report as well? - Will as a side effect also tell us which inxi version created the report, because some of the older inxi versions tended to report incorrectly that nouveau or nvidia had failed, although that had not failed loading.

Hi Karl,
Thanks for assisting me with this - it's really appreciated
Unfortunately I have managed to dig myself into a bit of a hole. Before getting your email I stupidly decided to install the "Recommended" NVidia driver, and so now Cinnamon crashes and reverts to fallback mode. Consequently, sending you the results of a

Is there a way to revert back to the previous driver (from the command line)? I can't seems to find a way to access the Driver Update screen in fallback mode.

Re: Graphics Driver Failure - nouveau?
Hello, bardfast.
The trouble with the Nvidia driver might be that both are getting loaded: nvidia and nouveau. And even fbdev is loaded.
This is a no-go.
The terminal commands to uninstall nvidia and re-install nouveau have been posted in several forum threads in the course of time.
Perhaps a forum search will retrieve at least a few of those threads.

Before I proceed with the Nvidia driver installation, I just wanted to confirm a couple of things...
- Do I not need to first uninstall the Nouveau driver? I ask because having previously tried to install the Nvidia driver via the "Driver Manager" screen, I ended up with both drivers installed - causing Cinnamon to crash.
- Which is the currently recommended driver. Nvidia or Nouveau?
George
Re: Graphics Driver Failure - nouveau?
Hi bardfast (George),
You are welcome...
No, you do not need to try and remove the nouveau video drivers first. The driver manager may not have the current or correct nVidia drivers for your particular video card, which is why the PPA is recommended. If you have a nVidia video card it is recommended to use their drivers unless it is a really old nVidia video card.
If for some reason the video card driver did not work, you can boot into recovery mode, select "root", enter your password, and run the first command to purge the nVidia drivers, type in "reboot", and try another nVidia driver or use the default Nouveau video drivers.
