PS/2 Keyboard not working after upgrading from Linux Mint 18.3 to linux 19.x

Hello everyone. Months ago I upgraded my old desktop pc from Mint 18.3 "Sylvia" to Mint 19 "Tara". On Sylvia my PS/2 keyboard worked fine, after the upgrade to Tara simply stopped working (while my PS/2 mouse still works). Neither the upgrades to Mint 19.1 first and 19.2 then resolved the issue. I searched for long time on Internet but I did not find a situation similar to mine. What can I do?

I always update, but since i've installed Mint 19.2 everytime i try to upgrade this error is showing:

Try switching to 4.15 kernel or other, I had some issues with PS/2 mouse + keyboard on my game PC with 5.0.0.XX kernel, how I have usb so 5.0.0.XX works.

It worked perfectly with Mint 18.3, immediately after rebooting to Mint 19 it stopped. I don't think that the port is broken, because the keyboard works at boot.

Then it must be something with the OS settings. I use an EagleTec Mechanical Keyboard, and in 17.3 I had to use a quirks mode in my grub.cfg file to have it work correctly in it. When I upgraded to 18.3 that carried over, so haven't checked to see if I still need it. I did check in 19.1 and it's no longer needed for my keyboard.

For instance, I used a command to find the manufacturer designator for the Holteck Semiconductor, which was 04d9:a0cd and then entered the quirks mode into grub.cfg which was usbhid.quirks=0x04D9:0xA0CD:0x20000408

I had to put that in each vmlinux boot line just before "quiet flash". Notice I also had to put 0x in front of each quartet of numbers in the manufacturer number.

Thank you for the suggestion, but i can't use lsusb for displaying PS/2 devices. There is a similar command?

Don't know of one. As mentioned before,PS/2 is mostly on motherboard chip, it's own sort of beast, and it either works or doesn't. It's not hot pluggable, and I don't even remember seeing it in the "dev" nor "blk" type devices.
Are you precluded from using a USB keyboard? With PS/2 there's basically 3 problems. Either in chip on motherboard, or with the device plugged to it, or the port being bad. It's one reason many USB keyboards fail to work when used with a USB to PS/2 adapter, because the USB keyboard may not also have the capability to work on PS/2 at all, some do include that ability, fewer in newest ones today.

What happens if you switch PS/2 ports used between the mouse and the keyboard?

I see windows uses the i8042prt.sys driver.
The i8042 was the chip on the old IBM pc that took care of the keyboard interface for PS/2. Today they'd consider it "Internet of Things" meaning it was hard coded to interact with PS/2 devices.

Maybe time to get a Logitech combo Keyboard with Mouse using a unifying receiver, which with the Solaar program in Linux works great through the USB port.

Folks, I think once we help him clean out his /boot so he can update, a kernel update may fix his keyboard problem.

Thank you for your suggestions i will try to switch ports and to visit the links that you provided. Since this is a spare computer i don't want to buy something that i will use rarely, and also the ps2 keyboard that i was using is very good so if it was possible to solve this problem it would be great.

I will try also this, thank you. My PC was an office PC, i don't know why it was configured like this, yes it has two 80gb HDDs, and it came out with Windows 7 Enterprise.

Folks, I think once we help him clean out his /boot so he can update, a kernel update may fix his keyboard problem.
