for dmesg, you can use command dmesg | pastebin then just share the url with us.

Are you suggesting that the beeps never happen unless you open chromium, period?

it would be good to see if there's an exact error message that occurs when the beep happens. You can use command dmesg --follow to watch it interactively. ctrl + c stops the process when you are done.

Also explain this "double booting" thing.

Sorry for the delay, I had used so many hours trying to sort this that everything else built up.

This really has got tldr hasn't it?

Originally, the pc would boot up with two beeps as below, but that doesn't happen now:
Grarea wrote: Tue Sep 03, 2019 9:01 am
The fans start immediately.
The monitor remains with no signal.
Beeps once and zoostorm logo appears.
Then blank screen for 16-17 seconds.
Beep once.
Boots to desktop.

Only have the one drive plugged in. The SSD with Linux.
Tried unplugging the CD.

When I restart, the fans don't come to a stop which they used to.

I am not sure when it started, but probably when I changed all my drives over.
Played a bit of a game of pass the parcel with windows Linux and storage.
Unplugging and plugging drives in (making sure I didn't delete the wrong stuff).
This didn't happen on the windows HDD.
Anyway, various testing and processes of elimination, i did a fresh install and the second beep went away.
When i went for the recommended gpu driver, the second beep reappeared.
When I went for the third driver on the list, I got a third beep (one whilst shutting down as well as the two on startup)

All fine it seems.
Now I have a new problem.
My graphics freeze. It happens pretty often, but not as bad as it was originally.
I have spent the last 4 hours on and off the pc and it has happened 3 times.
Everything becomes like a screenshot on the screen. The mouse still moves and audio continues but anything on the screen is unresponsive to mouse clicks.
The only things that are different that I can think of are the new install of linux, the ssd itself, the options of the gpu drivers and I also started using chromium.
I have tried using firefox and that didn't seem to do it as often, but it still ocurred.

But only like once a day.
I haven't noticed anything in common when it occurs.

I have never had it before even when it was beeping twice on boot.
Like i say, the only things I can think different are newer version of Mint, Chromium and the gpu drivers.

One thing you could try if you really want to narrow down the cuprit.

Install Ubuntu on the SSD if your current Mint installation is not critical to keep.

I personally think it's something in Mint and your motherboard combo

I really would like to suss it.
You have to restart your pc in the middle of something, so you have to start again.
The amount of times I have had to redo posts for here.

shall i do the

Code: Select all

dmesg | pastebin
still?

Did the last ones not tell us anything?

I think it is a mint/gpu thing.
But I am sure I am not the only one to have this version of mint and a gtx 550 ti eh?

Actually, I currently have a different gpu spare for a few days. Might try popping that in if i get the time.
I am amazed nobody (including gigabyte) have come across this before.

Right, need a to do list again. What do you reckon first?
a) try different gpu.
b) Actually, I should try running just chrome again. Forgot that bit.
c) Try ubuntu. Good idea. But that won't tell me what is actually arguing will it? Especially as mint and the gpu worked fine for 6 or 8 months.
d)

Code: Select all

dmesg | pastebin
e) Think about the recommended driver. That didn't freeze (well, that or chrome or previous mint), just gave two beeps.
f) Boot with nomodeset.
g) Maybe go back to it not freezing and using the recommended driver and working out what the double boot is?

Well if you have a spare GPU to try, go for it, that only takes a few minutes !

Not sure if you would have to do a new install of Mint for a GPU change, I would think not.

What GPU do you have for a few days ?

We really need to see the full dmesg. Please execute

Code: Select all

dmesg|pastebin
and share the url with us

Ha ha,
my thoughts exactly after the sudden realisation.

It is a R7 250 2GB.

Don't know if this is any indication, but Interestingly it booted from beep to desktop in the equal fastest time.
The other fastest was without any GPU.
It isn't loads quicker, but atm is 21 seconds, generally, they are 24-28 seconds. Always the same number for the thing I am testing.

Right, I shall give that a go for a bit. Let's see what happens.

I am also having trouble (since i moved from two beeps to freezing) :
Failed to download repository information:
Check your internet connection

This happened the other day, but I assumed it was a one off.
I have tried different sources and have uninstalled spotify as well now.

Although I haven't rebooted since I uninstalled it actually.
Edit: Same thing after reboot.
Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available, an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise, the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address is correct in 'Repositories' under 'Settings'.

h) Raid array query?
i) Is this message relevant in dmesg

I have been using this alternative gpu now for a few days, but only bitty.
However, it would definitely have frozen a few times with the other GPU.

So, now I am wondering if the gpu is faulty? I might be able to swap it out for the r7, but I need to check the 550 ti is ok before I sell it on.
Or if there is a compatibility issue with Linux/GPU/drivers/mobo???

Or if it might be one of the other little issues that seem to have cropped up.

My current pc has been completely fine since I swapped out the gpu.
Which is fine by me as I think this RX7 is better than my Nvidia. (Plus it keeps costing me hours and hours)
I need to now know if it is a comaptibility thing or a faulty gpu as I would like to sell it.

Put it in the 'spare' pc.
Same image of Mint.
Froze instantly. (well, within about 15 minutes anyway).
That proves it isn't my mobo being faulty which was suggested somewhere as a maybe.
That leaves faulty gpu or incompatible with Mint 19.2 methinks.
Shall try 19.1 out of curiosity.

Edit: Actually, it can't be my GPU can it?
It worked fine in the same machine but on windows.

Bit confused. Bit surprised at that.
It froze while trying to install Mint 19.1. Twice.
Then I managed to install it and it froze while trying to do Timeshift twice.

I didn't have any problems with it when I installed 19.1 with the same gpu on my current pc before.

Maybe the GPU is faulty and just getting worse?
------------------------------

Maybe not.
I just installed Manjaro no problems at all.
Only been an hour but not frozen once.
(Can't make it fit the screen, but that is a different thing)
Bit of a nuisance, as I gave this chap a copy of Linux Mint and he liked it :)

Not much to be confused about.
This version of Mint and your GPU/motherboard combo are incompatible.
Life's to short to be obsessed with things like this. :)
Either change GPU's or the version of Mint and move on.
You say a previous version of Mint works so use that or a different flavour like Manjaro.
