Wifi often loses connection

Post by ronanb96 »

My laptop seems to randomly lose connection to my router. the icon says I'm still connected but I can't ping the router or load anything. Restarting the Networkmanager gets it back but the issue might pop up again within a minute or 20 minutes

I have tried watching the output of dmesg and journalctl to see if anything could point me to the problem but didn't notice anything.
I've also tried disabling power manager on the wifi
I don't seem to have the issue when using the hotspot on my phone. The router is a Virgin Media Hub 3.0

When I first installed mint I did need to try a few things to get it to work in the first place, I believe I had to downloaded Atheros drivers and blacklisted the module

Ran wireless-info and attached the compressed file

it all looks good to me. Maybe some of the blacklists have an effect on it? Try it with bluetooth disabled (see control center (MATE) or whatever it's called in Cinn, and the bluetooth area). Try connection at 2.4GHz instead of 5. Also, does the same happen when connected instead by ethernent?

I ran the wireless info when the issue came up, attached is the diff. nothing jumped out at me in the diff.

I also tried commenting out the two blacklists I believe I added (ath_pci and ideapad_laptop) and rebooted and the issue still arose

I had a look at some wireshark logs and see a lot of ARP request coming from the router. When the wifi is working, I see a response, when its not working I don't see a response. I also can seem some mDNS and SSDP activity so I am still on the network. I not too familiar with ARP so I'm not sure if the frequent ARP requests are normal

regarding your suggestions, I haven't tried ethernet yet and I didn't see a nice way of configuring my laptop just to use 2.4GHz. The access point runs the two frequency bands under one SSID. And it does happen with bluetooth disabled

ARP = Address Resolution Protocol.

https://www.lifewire.com/address-resolu ... col-817941

https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/ ... r-switches

Let's run some commands for information gathering.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fzx
case sensitive. Should also show the wifi device and driver/mod used.

Code: Select all

iwconfig
wireless

Code: Select all

ifconfig
ethernet

I'm thinking a lack of proper communication between router and wifi device. It could be wrong driver, weak signal, or a failing wifi device.

I'll be back later, have to go somewhere now.

I don't see anything wrong with the system, the way it's set up. You even have a strong signal, no dropped packets, and a valid IP address from the router.
inet 192.168.0.24 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.0.255
inet6 fe80::5e58:9bbc:9c0b:f20d prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x20

This wireless works OK in windows? I would think either there's some intermittent problem with the wifi device, the router, or other interference. Are there other wifi users in the house? I know I had one daughter losing connections when her sister with newer laptop was in living room, because it was almost killing her reception. I had to increase the router's signal strength, I'd turned it down in past to not extend to far past house walls. I also had the stronger laptop signal reduced in strength, which solved that dilemna.

Re: Wifi often loses connection

Post by ronanb96 »

Sorry about the delay, got caught up in other things, no other devices in the house seem to have this problem and because I don't seem to have this problem using a hotspot from my phone, I thinking its something to do with my laptop having an issue with my router or vice versa.

About windows, sadly windows doesn't work on my laptop at the moment, an issue with windows needing one SATA driver and Linux needing another. Windows would always try to repair itself when I swapped the driver back but one time it didn't work. But anyway thats a question for a different forum post.

Back on point, I would've rarely used windows on this laptop as I prefer Linux but I don't remember seeing this issue the few times I used it

Can you try to run following commands by order.

Code: Select all

sudo rmmod ath10k_pci

Code: Select all

sudo rmmod ath10k_core

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe ath10k_core cryptmode=1

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe ath10k_pci

Code: Select all

sudo service network-manager restart
Above commands work temporarily until restart your PC. If the problem is solved in this way, permanent solution can be provided with a configuration file.

Didn't have any luck with those commands, wifi wouldn't come back up after modprobe, see below dmesg

I tried changing to the latest firmware firmware on https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmware
I tried using your commands before and after the upgrade with no success.

Also I did see this within the dmesg once but not sure if it was the wifi issue as I didn't see it everytime it happens

Lastly it seems a sudo apt upgrade(no wifi related upgrades) or git clone triggers the issues more often than just web browsing

When a wifi device causes too much trouble, rather than taking hours or days to track it down, I just toss on a USB Panda that works OOTB with Linux, and move on to happier times.

By the way: Since last Monday I can only reach the Mint-Forums via Opera with VPN - switched on somewhere in the Americas... Firefox and Vivaldi are unusable.

I don't think my issue relates your vpn issue but thanks for the info

From my googling Ive seen many post about atheros WiFi modems causing issues so I think I will try replacing the WiFi card. I would like to keep all of my precious USB ports free for other things.

Do you have any recommendations for a WiFi card that works well with Linux?

First try this:
Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels
Install the latest kernel of the 5.0 series. Then reboot and test.

With a bit of luck that kernel contains a newer Atheros driver that performs better.

Upgraded to the latest kernel still no luck. I have a different error in dmesg now though

Why are you using wifi while ethernet is plugged in too?
Is this wifi being used in VirtualBox?
Your system is encrypted? Or using a VPN?
I get the impression the firmware on the router needs an upgrade.

I have another wifi card on the way which is not qualcomm based
and to answer your questions
- Ethernet isn't plugged in
- This is not in a virtual box
- I'm not using a VPN and have not done anything to add any extra encryption
- The Virgin media router has limited options, I can check the firmware version but can't find anywhere to tell it to upgrade.

I hope the new card will fix my problems but will try any suggestions anyone has in the meantime

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dell_XPS_13_(9360)#Wireless wrote:Update: Internet connection dropped even with the firmware from the above fix. Using the newer firmware firmware-6.bin_WLAN.RM.4.4.1-00102-QCARMSWP-1 by downloading that file from https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmwar ... QCARMSWP-1, copying it to /usr/lib/firmware/ath10k/QCA6174/hw3.0/ and renaming it to firmware-6.bin fixes this. Reboot and verify that this newer firmware is used by verifying that dmesg | grep ath outputs:

Have you tried above suggestion for QCA6174? Especially did you use this firmware file?

I tried this firmware https://github.com/kvalo/ath10k-firmwar ... CARMSWPZ-1

I didn't understand the naming scheme, is 4.4.1.c3 release candidate 3 or is it newer than 4.4.1, from looking at the commit dates, it's newer.

I can try this firmware later today

Hi, I'm just wondering if your issue is resolved yet ? I have the exact same problem as you. Lenovo thinkpad running mint 19.2, recently upgraded to the virgin media hub 3 and have had nothing put trouble connecting to the wifi or wifi dropping out
