Unexplained Mouse Activity?

Post by Gualicho32 » Wed Apr 17, 2019 4:38 pm

I've noticed sometimes when I'm watching a video on youtube, the mouse arrow will seemingly activate and reappear on the screen when my hand isn't even on it. It will either move very little, or not at all. Still, I find this a bit unnerving. Could this be a telltale sign of a possible hacker or a rootkit? It would be obvious if the mouse suddenly started performing specific tasks on its own, but nothing like that has happened yet. By the way, I've tried installing "RKHunter" from the software repository, and haven't been able to launch the application. If anybody has some links to helpful resources on defending against attacks and defeating keyloggers in Linux, I'd appreciate it.

There's more probability that it's caused by earth tremors, or dirt in the mouse.

Heck, there's more probability it's caused by cosmic rays.

Did the cat walk into the room. It might be getting nervous. :D

Seriously, what sort of surface is the mouse on? Mine usually rests on the arm of the chair in which I am sitting. Although it is not slippery just moving slightly in the chair may cause the sensor to read the mouse has "moved". A shiny surface is even more problematic and a butterfly fart could be registered as a movement.

It rests on a glossy Ubuntu mouse pad on a flat surface. If shiny surfaces cause laser mice to read false movements, then that might explain why it suddenly moved ever so slightly out of the blue like that.

Shiny Surfaces are likely the cause. I never have success on shiny surfaces.

Yep, not a fan of shiny surfaces. I use copier paper as my mouse pad. Simply tape a couple of sheets to my desk. :D :D :D :D

Update: It still happens occasionally while streaming. Could the graphical print on the polyurethane mousepad actually set it off? It's not even a glossy surface like the old Ubuntu one was.

You don't say anything special about your computer: if it's a laptop - a touchpad and a connected mouse can act funny. This means switching off the touchpad when a mouse is connected.
If the mouse is still weird, just disconnect and reconnect it - at least with USB this works.

The best mouse pad is a piece of thick leather in the format of about A4 (please convert...) - pleasant for the hand, as well as for the mouse.
All these highly artificial plastic mouse pads trigger violent defensive reflexes in me.

Try a piece of 400 grit sandpaper, LOL. It won't move. Be daring, go for 1000 grit.
All things go better with Mint. Mint julep, mint jelly, mint gum, candy mints, pillow mints, peppermint, chocolate mints, spearmint,....

My guess would still be the mouse pad. Try to turn it upside down when watching videos to see if the issue stops. If it does, the mouse pad surface is the issue.

Or try something even more obvious.

Also, while it is upside down, take a really deep breath, pucker your lips like you're going to give a friend a kiss, and expell all the air out of your mouth as fast as you can at the little lens. Might be a bit of grit or hair caught in there as was suggested previously.

I did have a mouse that was going bad do the same once, so ended up doing some surgery on it to find the insides all yukky with dust/skin/hair/pethair mostly. Cleaning it didn't really help but hitting it with a hammer made me feel better.
Anyone else need a hand fixing their computer?

Remember the old days before optical mice, when we used to have to open them up and clean the little rollers because they'd collect lots of dust and gunk? Ah, the gold ol' days...

I still like the funny little balls of discarded Apple and PC mice. Kids love them too...
