Printer hardware settings screen locks up computer

Post by kdander » Thu Oct 10, 2019 11:22 am

I am having a problem with with my printer where I constantly get a "waiting for printer to become available" message and nothing prints. I went into system settings and selected the printer icon in the hardware window and saw that my printer was displayed and when I clicked on it the computer locked up. Only way to get the computer back up was to shut down and restart. I have a Brother MFC-J985DW printer. Any help would be appreciated> is there a key combination like Windows "control-alt-del to get something like the task manager?

Nice. It's an Airprint device so Brother printer drivers are not required. Two steps are all you need.

First get a URI with the command

Code: Select all

driverless
. Then do

Code: Select all

lpadmin -p j985 -v <URI> -E -m everywhere
(Without the angle brackets).

Try printing with

Code: Select all

lp -d j985 /etc/nsswitch.conf

Tried the suggested CMD settings, no help. see below to see results on CMD screen...

keven@keven-HP-15-Notebook-PC:~$ driverless
ipp://BRW2C6FC917433A.local:631/ipp/print
keven@keven-HP-15-Notebook-PC:~$ lpadmin -p j985 -v URI -E -m everywhere
lpadmin: Bad printer URI "URI".
keven@keven-HP-15-Notebook-PC:~$ lp -d j985 /etc/nsswitch.conf
request id is j985-45 (1 file(s))

When you stated that this is an "air printer" are you referring to WIFi? If not then what is "air printer"? What if I connected printer VIA Ethernet connection? Again thanks for the assistance

keven@keven-HP-15-Notebook-PC:~$ driverless
ipp://BRW2C6FC917433A.local:631/ipp/print
Good. That is the URI. It gets substituted in the lpadmin command.
keven@keven-HP-15-Notebook-PC:~$ lpadmin -p j985 -v URI -E -m everywhere
lpadmin: Bad printer URI "URI".
The command should be

Code: Select all

lpadmin -p j985 -v ipp://BRW2C6FC917433A.local:631/ipp/print -E -m everywhere
Then print as indicated.

See https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSAirPrint. I would give the same advice for an ethernet connection.
