Hello charroo,
Well Ubuntu is a fine distro, Not quite as user freindly as Mint. But since your asking on the Mint forums You will most likely get advice that would tell you to stay with MINT :) They will both work for you. The update speed should be about the same on both Distros.
If your update speeds seem slow you may want to check into using a different repository Mirror you can do that by going to Menu, System, Software Sources.
Choose the one that is fastest at your locations. Good Luck in your search.

Hi charroo.

If you're referring to older versions of software, both Mint and Ubuntu are basically the same. Most of your software in Mint actually comes from Ubuntu.

However, if you don't care about using an LTS version, Ubuntu does release a new OS every 6 months that will often have more recent versions of software in the respective repositories.

Hope that helps.

I'm talking about going to the software sources and choose a different Mint and Ubuntu Mirror, it will automatically rate their speed for you, choose a faster Mirror. Ubuntu's servers are the ones that Mint uses. So I doubt you see any difference if you switch to Ubuntu. Please try what I said in my first post and see if you can get a faster mirror.

Run this in a terminal to see that most of Mint comes from Ubuntu:

Code: Select all

sudu apt update
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!
