Help getting sound working?

Hi, I'm very new to Linux and can't seem to get sound working. I've searched and tried quite a few things but nothing is working. My headphone just have a static noise, and after everything I've tried whenever I bring up the Sound preferences panel the Headphones options flicker in and out rapidly, like it sees it and then doesn't see it, etc. Any help getting this working would be appreciated, I can't seem to make it work. Your sound card isn't properly recognized for some reason. This is evidenced by the aplay output not showing an ALC or other codec:

That is most likely the source of your issue(s) as your headphones, microphones and line ports all show as unavailable.

Lately, my success rate helping with sound issues has gone down some. Thanks Google! So I'm kind of leery seeing that term used when referring to me.

It kinda seems like since I made that page, most users need much more detailed help than that page provides. I guess that's sorta why I made it though. It generally gets about 20 hits a day since I put it up, but I don't know if that includes bots.

You didn't include your APU driver files section, for the video half of HDMI. That CPU should be using amdgpu driver, and maybe it's necessary for the sound to work also. What I've read indicates you need a kernel 4.2 or higher. What you currently have is 4.15.0-65

I think the first thing you should try is upgrading the kernel to the 5.0 series. You can do that via Update Manager > View > Linux kernels

Follow with a reboot, then test the sound.

Last time I tried to update the kernel to newer ( 4.2.x) cinnamon would crash. The latest kernel would cause a black screen. I'll give it another shot.

This is what I want you to try first. In the terminal enter alsamixer -c1 and when it opens use the right arrow key to move the the Channel Mode column. Use the up or down arrow to change it from 4ch to 2ch then test your sound.

I am hoping that will be enough to fix your issue, but we may need to try more things.

Okay. If you don't have it already, install and run PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol.)

It should already be set, but verify the Profile on the Configuration tab says Analog Stereo Duplex. Now look at the Output Devices tab. Does Headphones say plugged in? Is it muted? Check the sound icon next to the port for Headphones.

We may need to retask another pin to connect the headphones. I'll walk you through it if we need to go that far.

Also, I doubt this will help, but if Secure Boot is enabled in the BIOS, try disabling it, then see if aplay -l gives us an ALC# on this line:

No change, yes, it sees the headphones are plugged in and it's analog audio. Nothing is muted. I haven't checked the BIOS secure boot thing yet. I'm going to move on to doing Blender stuff tonight. Thanks again for the help and effort you're putting in to this. It's really appreciated.

That's the programmer for the extensive systemd expansive controller program, now found/embraced in all the major linux versions, and all the "buntu" based distros. Born out of Redhat linux.

I've been watching the alsa sound threads lately, because since I went to 18.3 the sound system has been "squirrely" with me too. HDMI sound drops out at times, but I can quickly bring it back by "switch user" and then log back in and sound works OK again. I NEVER had this problem in 17.3, and it makes no sense that to do a "switch user" and then quick login suddenly corrects it again. Trying to track down in systemd is a total "rabbit chase" past =.wants =.target =.needs =.slice, etc and ad nauseum.

Thanks for the video, that really helps me understand what you're seeing.

It's not an issue I've seen before. I'm wondering if there might be an issue with the wiring to the headphone port. You might want to check that the next time you shut down and have some spare time.

I'll continue on the assumption the wiring is fine.

Did you try the last line of my previous post? Your output showed that module wasn't loaded and I believe it's necessary for your sound to work. I'm not 100% certain with the generic probing that it's required, but an earlier part of the output showed this:

If running the modprobe command produces any errors, please post them here. The alsa force-reload command should spit out a bunch of junk that I'd like to see as well.

I'm sure you've probably tried it, but just in case, running pulseaudio -k in the terminal might produce the same result as what you're doing now. You'll probably need to restart the sound playing apps as well.

Also, in 17.3 you were using PulseAudio 4.0; in 18.3 it's PulseAudio 8.0; in 19.x it's PulseAudio 11.1 (and 13.0 is now out and is used in Ubuntu 19.x) It is possible PulseAudio is the source of your issue (if pulseaudio -k works that would prove it) or ALSA/kernel, or your graphics card/driver.
