Sound and DVD burn glitches

Hi greenstar,

I just read your post and the good replies to it. Here are my thoughts on this as well.

A.) That is good that your sound card seems to be working now, but weird that it required all that effort. Nicely done "MrEen". Anyone can get a low-cost or higher-cost USB sound card that works with Linux if their onboard or existing sound card is not working or not working well.

FYI: Regarding Sound applications: Install "pulse audio volume control" from the "Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)". There are some really nice graphical (GUI) programs for sound that start with "Qas", like the fantastic "Qasmixer", in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) that you can install and use. Sound "Mixers" can be a little confusing if you are not familiar with them. If you bring up "Qasmixer" and make it fullscreen, on the right side you will have mixer devices where you can control your system sound. If you do not see the mixer devices, hit "F6". The mixer item "sysdefault" will show all installed sound card devices, and you will have various options to adjust various volume controls using "sliders" which you can turn off and on using the "dot" below the volume slider. There are also various other check boxes below that you can use, and depending upon your sound card(s) that sometimes includes headphone checkboxes and or sliders as well, like "Headphone Jack Sense".

B.) You are using the default video driver rather than the nVidia video driver and you might consider installing the nVidia driver for your "GeForce 8400 GS" video card (nvidia-342) from the Device Manager or even better from the PPA.

C.) Regarding your computer's DVD drive. Your results from the console terminal command do not show a DVD drive. You can check to make sure the cables are connected properly, perhaps try another power cable, etc... Like most mechanical things with moving parts, DVD/CD/Blu-Ray drives will wear out over time. Fortunately, DVD/CD burner writers are not expensive only around $20-$30 us for internal or USB external. Most DVD/CD/Blu-ray drives will work with Linux, but read product descriptions and user comments from Amazon.com and eBay, etc... to make sure that don't say MS Windows or Mac only (which is rare).

Hi Phd21, thanks for the ideas. I have never heard of an external usb sound card adapter. I had been wondering about replacing the sound card. Or oven the motherboard, as mine is knocking 15yrs old and I could probably pick up something with more zest cheaply. The main thing that stops me is the possibility of going through all this again and the hours spent setting up. It would however be very helpful to get a DVD writer working again. I am not convinced that mine is faulty, as I have tried two with the same result, and the problem has been experienced by others (I googled it without solving it). It is simple enough to fit another internal writer, if I could be sure it will work and the problem is not with the os. Possibly this needs another thread. For me computers are a tool, I spend far too much on them I would prefer to spend on other interests!
My sound is still working but from the headphone output only, which is from the mobo, not the pci sound card at the back.

You are welcome...

Most people do not have issues like you have been having with Linux Mint and their sound. Usually the most that anyone would have to do is reset the "pulse audio" sound system using the two commands below.

Your system information results that you posted from "inxi -Fxzd" show only one sound card not two sound cards. It appears to be an onboard built-in sound card.

On my system if I have the headset plugged in the speakers will not work unless I change the sound settings in QasMixer or some other sound control app to disable the auto-mute mode. It is common for computers to have front and or rear audio jacks.

There are many types of sound cards and sound devices available with various features from basic to surround sound with or without "on device" controls to the better DAC with and or without pre-amps, etc... If you have a headset with only one plug for both audio and microphone, then get a USB sound card with one audio port for both speakers and mic or get a headset adapter.

I have a backup USB sound card below which is basic, but it is plug-n-play with Linux and other operating systems.

Wow! Some positive news for a change!

In most cases, and I assumed this to be your case, the ports on the back of the computer are also connected to the built-in audio on the motherboard. If your case is different, maybe re-installing the sound base has caused the system to recognize a PCI card it didn't see previously. Let's see the output of inxi -A, and pacmd list-cards again along with lspci please.

And I've been extra dim witted here - there is no sound card. I had the amp plugged into the jacks at the back, which are on the motherboard. I had a sound card in the past, but not in the present setup. Thanks again!

Yeah, Line is muted again. If you unplug the headphones, it would normally unmute automatically, and I still don't know why you don't have the Auto-Mute Mode option in alsamixer.

I'm hoping you can adjust it in alsamixer, but I know this didn't work for you previously.

I also have another idea that may get more desirable results. I need to see the output of ls -ls /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/ to be certain which files are available to you, then I'll ask for the output of some of those files.

I have no idea how that can happen. I have no idea how to "fix" it, or if it is even fixable or needs fixing. But I'm betting whatever is causing that is the source of your issue.

If my previous post about using alsamixer doesn't work, before we try the other thing I mentioned in my last post, let's see if this config change resolves what I'm showing in this post. In the terminal enter gksudo xed /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf then enter your password. When the file opens, scroll to the bottom and add this new line:

Save and close the file, ignore the warnings from the terminal, then reboot. Test your sound, and see if dmesg | grep snd shows either this:

Okay, it appears Line was already unmuted when you ran amixer set Line toggle so just run it again (depending what you've done since, you may need to do this twice) and it should look like this:

I'm hoping the volume level will actually be something other than 0, but the important part is to have [on] instead of [off]

If it does go to [on] but the volume is still 0, try amixer set Line 50%

NOTE: I just tested this with my Master volume control. Doing the toggle the first time successfully muted the volume. Then doing another toggle set the Master back to it's normal volume, but my headphones were muted. So this may not be the best method, but I'd like you to try the above. When you report success or failure, also include the output from cat /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output-lineout.conf and cat /usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output-headphones.conf and I'll see if there's a better way to get where we want to go.

Here it is! Just for the moment I have 2 pairs of headphones plugged into headphone and line outputs - I am assuming these are both the same impedance, but wanted to be sure there was nothing going on with my amp, although I had checked all was correctly connected. As before, headphone output at the front works well, line out at the back nothing.
