Post by JerryC58 »

Will a Lenovo laptop allow installation and operation of Linux Mint 19? Trying to buy locally to get around shipping time.

I have a Lenovo Ideapad 510 with 8Gb ram and an Nvidia GPU.
I've installed Mint 19.2 and Manjaro on it without problems.
Manjaro uses bumblebee which I find slows graphics performance.
Mint is better on my laptop.

I have Mint 19.2 Cinnamon on Lenovo Ideapad 530S (8/256GB), with kernel 5.3.
Works perfectly.

Most likely yes, but it's impossible to be more precise without knowing which Lenovo laptop. They have a very wide range... so save all of us a little time, and tell us which type you're considering.

Old fashioned HDD? It would definitely not be on my shopping list.
SSD or NVMe is a must nowadays. I'm surprised HDD equipped laptops are still for sale.

I agree. HDD wasn't on my shopping list either, but price was a factor as was speed of purchase. And at our age, having a hot rod laptop isn't a biggie.

Another question. How do you get the boot menu to pop up so I can boot from a thumb drive?

Most likely candidate is F12. But the machine should tell you during boot.

The new laptop has arrived and Linux Mint 19.2 is installed and the printer is working.

Get an error on boot up: Check video drivers
Currently running without video acceleration. May experience poor performance
Launch Driver Mgr

Launching
Updates cache

This leaves an empty driver mgr screen and a msg: no proprietary drivers in use

In control center/display it shows 1920X1080 (16:9) and there are no other options

How do I make this error message go away?

I don't know why the fbdev driver loaded and not the radeon. Someone will know how to fix that I'm sure. I'm afraid I'm not that someone, sorry.

As noted above, when the machine boots it is loading the wrong display driver. I went to the Lenovo web site and the only Radeon display driver they show for this model is a windows driver. Where can I find the correct driver with instructions for installation?

You have it already in the kernel. We just need someone that know how to make it active:

Code: Select all

unloaded: modesetting,radeon,vesa

... the wifi card in another Lenovo laptop the ThinkPad X140e model apparently didn’t like any of the generic drivers in LM XFCE 64 bit and refused to work. Everything else worked perfectly in Linux. When I reinstalled the original Windows 10 hdd the wifi functioned perfectly under Windows 10. Go figure. :?:
