Three screen captures using dpkg -l
1 Before Starting using a clean system with no printer
2 Brother Installed
3 Manually removing all I could and like you've done with the Brother guide
As you can see manual removal did't get rid of so very many items. It's why I trust Timeshift.

Yes, I've thought of the clean-install option. However, I think I'll at least try Brother, Inc. before going that far. And before Brother, I want to explore a little more of the Linux infrastructure to get a better understanding of the local server business.

Again, thanks for all of the time you've spent on this. If it is the intrigue of the challenge to figure this out, great! But know that I can continue in this state of repair indefinitely with not a whole lot of bother. I keep an SD card plugged into this machine so that if I need to print something I can dump it there and reboot Windows 7 to get it done. Actually, that's less trouble than all the retyping of passwords required to troubleshoot the problem in the Terminal environment. Nonetheless, I do want the machine to function as it should and it's rewarding to learn new things. So I'll keep pecking at it. I'm reasonably certain that I'll have it sorted out by the January cut-off date for Windows 7. If not my configuration will continue to serve, even if it has a slight Mad Max aura about it.

Yes, that confirms my impression. The main reason I think that it appears so few items are removed is that they're recorded in "Snapshots". That's another thing I've thought about doing - deleting all of the Snapshots currently in the system.
Am going off line for a time. Other household items require attention.
Thanks again,

I don't think dpkg -P installed packages would include files stored in Timeshift snapshots. I know it doesn't with Btrfs snapshots made by Timeshift and that's what I used to run the test. I only have one reference install with Ext4 and won't bother to investigate because I'm pretty sure of this. Post back if you have a eureka moment.
And yes, I do this stuff to learn, but I like helping too.

Well, that eureka moment occurred about four hours ago. All I had to do was clear out the extended partition that was housing Linux and install it again from the same live DVD used for the original install. Go figure. I must have corrupted something during the original install.
Hard to figure what went awry, given that everything else seemed to work.
I said "everything". There is the matter of the scanner not working, just as it does not work on the test laptop running Linux Mint 19.2 Cinnamon.
But that's for another thread. In reading about the printer install there were a couple of items that suggested that the scanner problem is a known issue.
Thanks again for all of your help.

Wowzers! Glad it's fixed. So did you do the typical Terminal install using the one download from Brother?

Yes. I think it was one of the Brother, Inc. links you suggested.
https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloa ... dlang=true
It looks like it is structured for installs in the EU but the one used for the test laptop was a USA-relevant version and it behaves the same way with respect to the scanner.
I read somewhere that the FAX feature was not supposed to work in the USA due to its not meeting a requirement of a notice being superimposed on a header page.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. Have not tried the FAX feature. I mentioned it thinking that there might be some shared code between the scanning and FAXing features.

That has great can-o-worms potential. I don't have a land-line phone. I'm given to understand that it is possible to configure a cell phone but... I'd better stick with getting the scanner working. However, it could be a long winter and I may need something to do before spring...

Scanner works - sort of. Found an accessory utility called "Simple Scan" that was part of the Mint distribution. Tried it and it did not initially work. An internet search turned up this copy /usr/lib64/sane into /usr/lib/sane. Not sure how to express that in terminal speak. But I just did drag and drop in the Files utility.
I'd still like to have the Brother scanner driver functionality but this will do for now.

I forgot to mention Simple Scan (assumed you knew). It's what the user utilizes to perform a scan. Mine works great, but as we sure know by now, "your mileage may vary". So what does sort of work mean?

Hello Sequimer,

please open your file manager, highlight "file system" and search for "brscan". The results will show files with brscan for example "brscan2.list". If you find brscan4, see below.

if it still doesn't work after copying the files, then you should create an udev-rule in this way (it is for brscan, brscan2, brscan3):

Code: Select all

sudo -H xed /etc/udev/rules.d/59-udev-local.rules
(ignore the warnings in the terminal; enter your password, maybe twice)

Copy the following text in that file, then save and close:
# Brother brscan devices
ATTRS{idVendor}=="04f9", ATTRS{idProduct}=="*", MODE="0664", GROUP="scanner", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"
If it doesn't work immediately, please reboot.

For "brscan4" take this way:
a) execute 'lsusb' to get VendorId (04f9) and ProductID
b) create '/etc/udev/hwdb.d/brother4.hwdb'
content:
usb:v04F9pYYYY* (pYYYY is product ID from lsusb, Example: usb:v04F9p035D, 04f9 is vendor ID, and 035d is product ID for BrotherMFC-1910W")
libsane_matched=yes
c) edit '/etc/sane.d/dll.d/libsane-extras'
add 'brother4'

Scans can only be initiated from the laptop. One of the drivers, "brscan-skey" is supposed to support scan initiation from the Brother's control panel. Also, the Simple-Scan scans are slow, generate large files (4-5mb for a simple, 1-page, text), and are of marginal quality.
In fairness, I've not yet tested the various settings available in Simple Scan.

I tried the rules implementation but it had no effect. That's OK. I fiddled with the settings in Simple-Scan and have a setup that works for me.
Am moving on to organizing the email (Thunderbird) and finding suitable replacements for MS Office Picture Manager and MS Paint.
As it stands, I could walk away from the MS Windows world today with only minor/ moderate inconveniences relating to email and image handling. Apart from getting updates until the January End-Of-Life, I've no need for Windows to touch the internet.
Thanks for all of the help.
