[Cinnamon 19.3] Questions about mintsources error

Post by S3NTYN3L »

I was trying to help someone on Reddit with the following issue earlier today.

They were following the official instructions to install the WINE PPA to Mint Cinnamon 19.3.
As you can see in this image they got an error of:
Malformed input, repository not added.

I suggested that they add the PPA via the Software Sources GUI but they got the same error.

I then suggested;

Code: Select all

sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/lock
sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/status /var/lib/dpkg/status-bad
sudo cp /var/lib/dpkg/status-old /var/lib/dpkg/status
sudo apt install -f
sudo apt clean
sudo apt autoremove --purge
sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists/
sudo mkdir -p /var/lib/apt/lists/partial
sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
hoping that might help, but alas...

Adding deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ bionic main to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/winehq.list did work though.

So, in my insatiable need for closure, I kept digging and found that apt probably isn't the problem here.
I'm now thinking it's the Software Manager itself.

Would suggesting;

Code: Select all

sudo apt remove --purge mintsources
sudo apt install mintsources
be the right thing to do?
Would it fix the issue or open a whole different can of worms?
Do you think this will happen again the next time they try to add a PPA?

Thanks in advance.

The "right thing to do" is post the exact command line that was used to add the PPA.
It's pronounced kad-eye-cha, not kada-itcha.
