experiencing Cinnamon crash when using "Choose player controls" from sound applet

As per the topic subject, I'm experiencing Cinnamon crash when using "Choose player controls" from sound applet.

What makes that difficult to address is that I can't reproduce that easily. It just happen sometimes. From memory I'd say this likely happened ONLY when switching controls TO Rhythmbox AND only if music isn't playing... or at least I don't remember it ever happened under different conditions.

I then restart Cinnamon just fine so this isn't a major problem, it's just something annoying. Nonetheless, I'd like to fix it if possible.

FYI I'm on a Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya. Let me know if there are other info you need to diagnose.

I can't reproduce on Cinnamon 4.4 in 19.3 for what it's worth.

What other players to you have installed?

Yeah, I can't reproduce it either. I probably need some information on where to look next time it happens.

I mean, does Cinnamon have a crash log? Or are there system files that I can check to see what just happened?

FWIW I have also Brasero, gtkpod, Media Player and VLC installed too, but I seldom use them.

So try it again and tell us if it's only Rhythmbox or not. If so, where did you get rhythmbox from when you installed it?

Check in your ~/.xsession-errors next time in crashes. It will often show the crash and what caused it. If you find it paste the output here.

Also give the exact steps that led up to the crash if you can.

Thank you. What do you mean by "switching to Rhythmbox controls?" You mean selecting Rhythmbox from the applets "Launch player" menu?

I mean that Cinnamon crashed when using "Choose player controls" to select Rhythmbox from sound applet.

Not sure why last block in .xsession-errors file is from nm-applet though :(

It did it again one minute ago. The only difference is that this time the music was playing, so we can add that we don't need the player to be stopped for the bug to happen.

OK now it's getting ridiculous - I just crashed Cinnamon by swapping player controls TO Chromium too, not only to Rhythmbox.

OK, now I (sort of) know how to reproduce it.
First of all, it doesn't depend if Rhythmbox is playing or not.
Then, you need both Rhythmbox and Chromium (I'm using Vivaldi browser) open.
Check if the sound applet shows both in the 'Choose player controls'.
Don't close any of the two programs (or switch controls) for a good 120+ minutes (probably even less but it won't happen if there's not enough passed time - the exact amount is still unknown to me :( ).
Now go on the sound applet and switch player controls.
Cinnamon crashes, 100% of the time (given 'enough' time has passed)

in the while I found this workaround: make Chromium not appear in the list.
chrome://flags/#enable-media-session-service -> set to Disable

but I'd like to find the root cause of the crash and hopefully fix it (myself, with your help)

It sounds like Chromium is giving bad (or at least unexpected) data to the Sound applet that the sound applet can't handle. Now the current version of the sound applet in Cinnamon 4.4 doesn't have this crash so if you wanted to try and fix your old Cinnamon 3.4 version I would...

1) Copy /usr/share/cinnamon/applets/sound@cinnamon.org to ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets/sound@cinnamon.org

2) Experiment with modifying the copy you have just recreated.

3) Refer to the commit history of the sound applet - https://github.com/linuxmint/cinnamon/c ... nnamon.org

This is the first commit that post-dates Cinnamon 3.4 - it looks like it could be relevant for your issue.

That commit you pointed out seems interesting!

So, after I had copied the whole sound@cinnamon.org directory into ~/.local/share/cinnamon/applets and having edited the applet.js file, what should I do to make that change effective? A cinnamon restart I guess... how can I then double check and be sure it's using my edited copy instead of the original one in /usr/share/cinnamon/applets?

No luck so far. :(

Though that commit you pointed out seemed very relevant, unfortunately I experienced again a Cinnamon crash yesterday evening :evil: (yes, I had copied and edited the file in the morning and turned off the PC for lunch so I believe in the afternoon the updated code was running...)

BTW I'm thinking we might be watching in the wrong direction. I mean, I'm sure the problem is triggered by my action of switching player controls from the sound applet - and in fact the code I patched was exactly the function responsible for that action:

OK, I finally found a way to reproduce the problem 100% of the times, and even don't need to have any waiting (because I found out what I had missed...)

- first you need to have Rhythmbox open (playing something or not seems unimportant - but let's play something anyway)
- then open Chromium (I'm on Vivaldi). As long as you don't open any tab requiring audio, "Choose player controls" won't appear on the sound applet
- open second/additional tab on Chromium, go over YouTube and start a video
- now "Choose player controls" appears on the sound applet. Switch once or twice, just to test that it works correctly
[edit] - leave player controls selected to Rhythmbox
- close the YouTube tab, but leave Chromium open.
[edit] - (you can even open another YouTube tab and play another video now!)
- now as soon as you try to switch player controls [edit: to Chromium] from the sound applet, Cinnamon crashes. :shock:

to do that again you need to close Chromium and start over. I can consistently crash Cinnamon now.

What other details are needed?

so I think what's above it's enough to file a bug report, if this is confirmed happening also on a up-to-date Mint 19 with Vivaldi and Rhythmbox, right?

Can anyone try on his set up and see if this still happens? :?

It doesn't crash Cinnamon 4.4 on 19.3 (I'm testing with Chrome).

Would it be asking you too much to try with Vivaldi? The problem might come from their specific implementation (but the effect anyway is that Cinnamon, and not Vivaldi, crashes... :? )
