Synaptic Cached Package Files

Post by LanceM »

Mint 19.3 Cinnamon
When using Synaptic to Delete Cached Package Files is it the same as

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get autoclean
Also is there a way to tell what is being removed by, and the size in MB before running

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get autoclean
Like the size of what

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get clean
removes by running this first

Code: Select all

sudo du -sh /var/cache/apt/
Apt.jpg

You can see what will be removed by using the -s for simulate apt-get -s autoclean

You can also simulate a package installation/purge.

Thanks very much! On the subject of cleanup I'm also wondering about the use of this: https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... .html#ID10 although from more looking online 200M is more commonly recommended. My /var/log is 1.4GB, so that's a pretty drastic reduction.

I've never made any changes to limit systemd logs and this is my /var/log/ usage:

Code: Select all

[bill@XPS-sylvia] ~/Downloads ->$ sudo du -d2 -h /var/log
168K	/var/log/ConsoleKit
144K	/var/log/apt
76K	/var/log/mdm
4.0K	/var/log/upstart
68K	/var/log/cups
2.4M	/var/log/installer
4.0K	/var/log/ntpstats
4.0K	/var/log/samba
12K	/var/log/fsck
309M	/var/log/atop
56K	/var/log/unattended-upgrades
4.0K	/var/log/speech-dispatcher
360K	/var/log/timeshift
317M	/var/log
[bill@XPS-sylvia] ~/Downloads ->$
I'm running Sylvia (18.3) so I don't know if that makes a difference.

No, it's the same as apt clean. But you don't have to do it manually at all - those cached packages get removed automatically after a few days.

I'm puzzled why my /var/log is so bloated, especially since it was a clean install of Cinnamon 19.3. I use Btrfs, but other than that it's a minimal install.

Code: Select all

$ sudo du -d2 -h /var/log
232K	/var/log/apt
60K	/var/log/cups
0	/var/log/hp/tmp
0	/var/log/hp
1.2G	/var/log/journal/f3d85c83fd6e458aba76dbf56f683032
1.2G	/var/log/journal
68K	/var/log/lightdm
0	/var/log/openvpn
0	/var/log/samba
0	/var/log/speech-dispatcher
1.1M	/var/log/installer
2.5M	/var/log/timeshift
1.2G	/var/log
Oh, and thanks gm10 for your post, appreciated!

Running

Code: Select all

tail -n 100 /path/to/logfile
There's a lot of these:

Code: Select all

Feb 5 11:59:37 LM gnome-terminal-[6415]: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:9023:57: The :insensitive pseudo-class is deprecated. Use :disabled instead.
Feb 5 11:59:37 LM gnome-terminal-[6415]: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:9390:29: Invalid number for color value
Feb 5 11:59:37 LM gnome-terminal-[6415]: Theme parsing error: gtk.css:10284:1: '/*' in comment bloc
And a lot of these firewall events (erased everyting after MAC):

Code: Select all

Feb 5 12:01:11 LM kernel: [ 253.608681] [UFW BLOCK] IN=eno1 OUT= MAC
