I have tried this method three times but if it imports passwords, I can't see where they went.

Just tried it now, and it didn't even give the option to bring over passwords.

Even if I can't get the import to work, I'm bolting to Firefox. I turned on its sync and am putting in passwords manually, site by site, of all the sites I use regularly.

Oddly enough, the freezing is not nearly as bad on my laptop, with specs lower than that of the desktop.

A quick check of htop shows the extreme memory use of Chrome is bad on both machines, but the laptop doesn't freeze up nearly as much.

No matter, I have Firefox set up how I want it, with my most used sites saved/passworded and synced, and on the button bar like they are in Chrome. And it seems faster even on this laptop.

UPDATE: This appears to have been fixed in Chromium 80.0.3987.66:

https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/is ... id=1036742

I hit Update Manager on both my machines, and it brought in Chrome 80.0.3987.87, which seems to work fine so far.

Version 79.0.3945.79 (Official Build) Built on Ubuntu , running on LinuxMint 18.1 (64-bit)
BTW, I didn't realize you could run Chrome... I am on Chromium
I will check the repository

Chrome for Linux is downloaded directly from their site, as a .deb file. It is not in the repositories.

https://www.google.com/chrome/

This will probably get you the new version, even on LM 18.
Note: Installing Google Chrome will add the Google repository so your system will automatically keep Google Chrome up to date. If you don’t want Google's repository, do “sudo touch /etc/default/google-chrome” before installing the package.
And I'm getting freezes again (!) with more than about 4 windows open and lots of content in those windows. I suspect that is a local issue and not related to the bug. So for now, I'm back to Firefox on this machine...

Thanks for the reply.
I had already downloaded from their site before I saw you posting so I didn't set up the blockade.
Don't have that many windows open yet but not having freezing watching a few YT videos.
I will turn up the heat and report back.

As noted, Chrome generally takes a lot of memory when a few windows are open. I only have under 4 GB of memory on these machines, and at the time I posted the above, I also had Firefox still open.

I'm proceeding cautiously, but that link above is clearly a fix for the problem that was merged into the update.

The newest chrome update (2nd since the problem started) seems to have fixed it for me. Before, increasing swappiness helped but not 100%.

I think my earlier issues on this desktop, post-upgrade to 80.*, was timeshift hitting the computer too much. It does its daily rsync at about this time, so I'll move it later...

Without that going on, no lockups. With that going on, Firefox also showed lockups it normally does not show.

I turned off Timeshift's daily runs for now. Still kept weekly and monthly, and will do manual if needed before any system changes.

Hopefully, that will make Chrome faster!

Just received the update on Chromium
Version 79.0.3945.130 (Official Build) Built on Ubuntu , running on LinuxMint 18.1 (64-bit)
I guess I will try it some but have already switched over to Firefox when in doubt and Chrome (can't remember why Chromium became the favored alternative to Chrome for LM??)

And I agree with that. It's fixed.

The problem on this desktop was indeed Timeshift running. It was very slow last night, and sure enough, the weekly Timeshift session was taking place at that same time.

I see that I've chosen not the right time to switch from Ubuntu 18 (that a second time per year entered in its lovely login loop).

It took all night to download the LinuxMint 19.3, after the managing of all features - voila:
- Google Chrome freezing just after a try to sign in to your account;
- the same is Chromium.

The worst experience I've ever had with all these Debian's distributions.

Really, I don't know what to try else. Maybe Kali, Fedora, Windows 98, MsDos?
Excuse me, maybe for you it's just unproductive emotions but it's indeed a huge frustration  !

The people know about this problem than why not to indicate it just right on the download page or leave a link to stable version or indicate in the Software manager a link to a compatible version of Google Chrome? But not, One likes to create a best subject to speak about!
