I've had great success installing Mint for tons of seniors/beginners in my town
Hey all,
Long-time listener, first-time poster.
My name is Marc, I do in-home tech support for seniors/boomers/beginners. I've been installing Mint for my clients since 2011, and they're thrilled.
Sure I've got a few people who need to run 1991 business software, but the majority of my clients just want something that works consistently, and looks familiar. Rather than milk people for $50-100 per month on useless virus scans and such, I put Mint on their machines and they don't need me for a long time. The fact that I didn't milk them for fees actually backfired in a good way: They're now telling all their friends about Mint.
I read a thread or two about promotion, and how hard it's going to be, and how we shouldn't try and go against The Will of Microsoft, so to speak. Well, I've installed it for around 1000 people in the past decade, so I know it's possible. I'm in love with the concept of Open Source, which is massively important in an industry that now believes it has the right to control, modify, and decommission the products they sold you.
Since then, I wrote a book and started a talk show promoting the wonders of Mint, and I'm starting to license my model (includes lots of other stuff, like performing proper backups, ripping out Combo Boxes and putting in real wireless routers, etc.) to technicians around the country.
Cheers guys.

Impressive. I do hope those users are donating a bit to mint. For the people I install for, about half make donations.

That's a great point. I don't think any have but I'll try and remember to tell them they can donate.
I donate myself but not as much as I should. I'll work on that too!

Hi teknosophy_com,
welcome to our forum.
it would seem that you've managed to out_do most of us, with that rather impressive achievement,
- - what you could do, though, is to add $5 to your own Fee & then Donate that to the LinuxMint.project
on behalf of those folks, that you've converted away from the World of Windows.

1,000 installations of Mint is a great accomplishment for sure.
I think installing the OS on people's systems is probably the single best way to promote Mint because once people use it they almost always like it and they'll tell others about it. This type of word of mouth advertising is probably the most valuable form of advertising.
If you sell your book online you should put a link for it in your signature on this site, you may also want to do that for your internet radio show.

Yes, I've got it on my to do list to donate more to Mint.
Also that's a good idea, I'll add the book to my signature on the forum! Here it is:

Thank you for sharing this here.
You may want to consider promoting your book and your radio show on craigslist or in some "buy/sell/trade" facebook groups. That should help you get some additional exposure.
I wish you the very best in your continued efforts.
