How to fax with hplip

I've set up my HP Envy 5660 all in one printer with hplip and the printer and scanner are working fine. The HP tutorial says to select "send fax" to open the interface. I see no option like that in the hplip toolbox. So how do I send FAXs with hplip. New to Linux Mint

I dont fax but found this:

Install hplip-gui

sudo apt install hplip-gui

From Application Launcher open Hplip-Toolbox

Select HP "name of printer"(Fax)

Under Actions tab select Send Fax

And follow the steps.

I dont know why places still use faxing. I see this in Hospitals / Doctors / Pharmacies / Law Offices / Governments. Seems a lot easier to just print to pdf and send via email.

Well, Im sure there is some reason for it. Perhaps some laws governing security of data if you do it via email.

Here is a screenshot. I previously installed HPLIP and toolkit. Looking at the screenshot and you will notice that "FAX" is not listed. That is my problem.

After seeing the above maybe the FAX button is not there because my printer is a three in one - print, copy and scan. It is not a FAX machine in the literal sense. In windows I would scan into a fax program which would fax out the scans via a fax modem. I thought the fax button in HPLIP was a fax program like I used in windows. I'll have to think about how to fax. My wife is a teacher and when she is sick I have to fax the lesson plans to the school. They have to be faxed, they won't accept a email with file attached.

As I described above: In Windows I had a FAX program that I could scan into the program, from the printer/scanner, then send the FAX out the phone line. Is there such a program in LM? I really don't FAX enough to justify paying for a FAX service like EFAX. Yes they have a free version, max 3 pages, but the cover page is like a big oll advertisement sheet for them. This is one of the last solutions I need to solve to feel comfortable switching completely over to LM.

After messing with several "All in One" printers, I have given up on making them work as a Fax Machine.

the biggest reason, is I do NOT have a dedicated 2 wire telephone service, and have not for 12 years.

Yes, I think that is going to be the best solution. I used it a couple of times from windows years ago. I just don't like the cover page all plastered with their faxzero watermark.

faxzero seems like a workable solution. There are some open source FAX software apps for linux but I have never used them and know nothing about them except that they exsist.
There is an app in the the Mint (I guess technically Ubuntu) repository efax-gtk that you may want to explore that will allow you to FAX from your PC. I have not tested this but may be something that you would prefer over faxzero.
These instructions refer to Ubuntu but since Mint is based on Ubuntu will work for Mint as well.

I checked into that article, and came to a firewall impossible to get over, for the same reason I gave up on All-in-one printers. That program requires a "fax modem", which also requires a dedicated 2-wire telephone line.

A needless thing to have in the modern world of wireless cellphones. I got rid of my dedicated phone line simply because back in ~2004 the cost of that line was ~$40/month and it was never used. My business card had my cellphone number on it.... so I dumped the phone line.

I rarely, very rarely ever have a need to receive a fax, and the only two times I needed one, I had it sent to my local bank.... problem solved.

I used to have to send a fax to a doctor's office, and I used FaxZero for that....
but even that has fallen by the wayside, as all of my doctors are now using a common online host for me to send them Private Letters direct to them via their webhost.

When I bought my home about 10 years ago, the Title company said that a printed PDF and my signature in BLUE INK and then sent back to them via email was Legal to use..... that ended the FAX requirement right there for me.

Fax machines are archaic but still in use by small offices that do not have an IT savvy person or service....
300 baud is terribly slow, but eventually gets the job done... but it is in Black and White, and extremely grainy, looks like old B/W film that has been boosted to 1000 to capture dim subjects....

I have a very small desktop PDF Scanner made by the "Neat" company, about 2" square and 12" inches long. fits in a briefcase if you need a PDF on the go.... which I used to.

Smartphones today, and use apps to take a picture of a document and convert it to PDF, so a dedicated hardware scanner is not even needed today.....

I bought my Neat Scanner before Smartphones were the "in thing" to have.


I see that Neat Corporation no longer sells a scanner under their own name, I suspect that if I looked real hard, that mine is actually made by Fujitsu

faxzero it is then. I cannot remember the last time I used a FAX - never from home for sure though. And a standard 2wire land line . . . . . trying to think maybe around 2001, 2002 when we went with VoIP. Funny though my HP Officejet Pro 8610 advertises FAX capability but I would have no idea how to set it up and from what you say it would not be physically possible anyway.
