Roku TV + netflix = breaks the modem ?!?

Post by Flemur »

Question: is it possible for a Roku TV running netflix to break (disconnect) a DSL wifi modem? (!?!)

Starting about 10 days ago, after running for about 5 to 10 minutes, netflix on this Roku TV, will have connection problems, and when we look...

...the modem lights will be out, as if it had been unplugged and plugged back in.

Naturally I figured the modem had to be the problem, and the modem had caused netflix to loose the connection.

BUT! And this is a very big but, on the same TV, Prime video works fine for hours and days at a time ...until we start netflix, then the modem breaks (lights go out) within 5 to 10 minutes, and, after the internet recovers and netflix starts again, the wifi will go out every few minutes (w/modem lights off). But Prime will work for hours - indefinitely - after the connection recovers.

This has been reproduced at least four times: all WiFi works fine for a day or two, or hours at a time, until we start netflix on this TV, then the modem breaks with lights out after a few minutes of playing netflix on this TV.

With netflix on a firestick in another room, netflix might have problems but the modem is unaffected.

The modem is an oldish C1100T, which is normally very reliable. The Roku TV is about 8 months old.

I haven't been able to find anything about this issue on the intertubes...

The Roku TV + netflix really do break the modem! After running two days with no problems, I started netflix and the modem died in about 30 seconds. Hooking the TV to the ethernet didn't fix it...weird.

Have you got another modem to try? Will Netflix work on your computer without issues?

Netflix plays OK on the computer and also on a 'firestick' in the next room...it's very weird: just (netflix+this TV).

Don't have another modem, though that'd be a great test....hmmm maybe there's an old one somewhere.
