unable to log on as regular user

I reinstalled my system with dual boot debian and LinuxMint. LinuxMint on top of Debian, or instaled last.

I don't understand what a single install means here ?,
--which one Debian version ? or Mint version ?

Anyway a way to test the login.

• alt F1
• sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
• login with your user name (Frank ?)
  --does that work
• sudo /etc.init.d/gdm start
  --does that work, do you get the desktop

It might be helpful to see the contents of your /boot/grub/menu.1st file
--it may also be important to know which version of grub is being used on the debian install and on the Mint install

In terminal, check
--for Linux Mint 7 -gloria 32 bit version
