Post by marcianana »

Hello everyone,

I am quite new at this, and I just installed mint 19.3 XFCE (64-bit) on my old HP Pavillion DV8000. There are no wifi connections listed.
Here is my inxi output:

Any ideas about what I could do?

Thanks!

Is there a button above the keyboard under where it says 'hp' to turn Wifi on?

Your wifi is hard blocked. Is there a button above the keyboard under where it says 'hp' to turn it on?

Hi,

yes, there is. It was the first thing I tried, but it's not changing anything... I guess it's a hardware problem and not much I can do, then?

Some things you can try:

See if you can enable wifi in the Bios or reset Bios to defaults.

On some laptops, you may have to shut down, remove battery and power cord and hold power button for 10-20 seconds, reconnect everything and boot.

You can also try:

Code: Select all

 sudo service network-manager restart

You can try to run following command to disable hp_wmi for solving hardblock issue.

Code: Select all

echo "blacklist hp_wmi" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/hpwmi.conf
Reboot your PC after command.
Device-1: Broadcom and subsidiaries BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g
Wireless LAN
vendor: Hewlett-Packard driver: b43-pci-bridge v: N/A port: 9000
bus ID: 06:02.0 chip ID: 14e4:4318
Also you must install firmware-b43-installer package for this device and you must disable secureboot from BIOS/EFI settings.

Code: Select all

sudo apt install firmware-b43-installer

Is this still a problem? If so, try:

Code: Select all

 sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source broadcom-sta-common broadcom-sta-source && sudo apt-get install --reinstall b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer
Reboot & if needed toggle your wifi button off & on.
