[Solved] Timeshift does not run from mintmenu

Post by Terryphi »

On one of my computers, after upgrade to 19.3 Mate, Timeshift does not run from the default menu on the bottom panel. If I create an icon for Timeshift on the panel it does run. It also runs from the menu bar I have on the top panel.
These log entries appear to be associated with the problem:
ENTRY IN SYSLOG

Code: Select all

org.mate.panel.applet.MintMenuAppletFactory[1140]: Refusing to render service to dead parents.
ENTRY IN AUTH.LOG

Code: Select all

pkexec[3542]: terry: Error executing command as another user: Request dismissed [USER=root] [TTY=unknown] [CWD=/home/terry] [COMMAND=/usr/bin/timeshift-gtk]

Sounds like a double forking bug with your menu. What happens if you change your menu entry's command to timeshift-launcher?

That makes no difference. Clearly the menu entry is correct because it runs from any source other than mintmenu.

Well, I dunno, can you start Software Sources? For that launches the same way.

You could also try with another menu, including my mintmenu fork that you can get from my PPA linked in my signature.

gm10, I checked and software sources does not run from mintmenu and produces the same errors in logs. However, like Timeshift, it works from Menu Bar which I have on a top panel.
AUTH. LOG ERRORS

Code: Select all

polkitd(authority=local): Operator of unix-session:c1 FAILED to authenticate to gain authorization for action com.linuxmint.mintsources for unix-process:1320:3871 [mate-panel] (owned by unix-user:terry)

Code: Select all

pkexec[3885]: terry: Error executing command as another user: Request dismissed [USER=root] [TTY=unknown] [CWD=/home/terry] [COMMAND=/usr/bin/mintsources]
SYSLOG ERROR

Code: Select all

org.mate.panel.applet.MintMenuAppletFactory[1123]: Refusing to render service to dead parents.
I wonder if it could be a polkit issue?

No, sounds like a bug with the way the menu spawns applications.

Feel free to use my version of the menu, I'm sure it wouldn't have that problem (and feel free to use my other forked tools, too, they also don't have a lot of the bugs that Mint's respective versions do - and a bunch of additional features ;)).

Same here. Upgrade from 19.2 to 19.3, MATE. Timeshift runs from the panel or desktop, but not from Mint Menu. Same problem for Software Sources.

Edit (31 Mar 2020): I tried again today and Timeshift and Software Sources now do work from the Menu. (Release Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia 64-bit; Kernel Linux 5.3.0-42-generic x86_64; MATE 1.22.2.)

Hi,

We're working on a fix. We've two solutions already, but we're still investigating why this doesn't happen on fresh installs.

It is. 6.0.3.1 is for 19.3, 5.9.1.2 is for LMDE 3 and 4.
