ASUS UX533 laptop fan not working

Post by Arntor »

I have a dual-boot system with windows and Mint 19.2.
Under windows the laptop fan is spinning quite loud.
Under Mint it is not spinning at all and the CPU sometimes reaches 70-80 degrees, which is a lot, and the bottom of the laptop is always very hot

the "sensors" command doesn't see a fan at all, this is the output:

Code: Select all

coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Package id 0: +47.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 0: +45.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 1: +45.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 2: +47.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
Core 3: +46.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C)
the "pwmconfig" command says:

Code: Select all

There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed

Have you updated the laptop's motherboard firmware to the newest version. Asus supplies a bootable OS independent update for your laptop.
I think this is probably the right one, although it says its for 15 UX533FD
Version 304
2019/07/015.14 MBytes
BIOS 304
Optimize system performance

There may be Fan always on setting in BIOS. I have it, though the BIOS is different.

Unfortunately there is no such setting.

Hm could this possibly be related to secure boot and not turning it off?

No it's not. You can clean the fan physically and see that nothing obstructs it. That the lint is cleaned.

Same issue here (same laptop but using Ubuntu).

Some new idea about that?

Hi I had the same problem with my Asus UX433FA.
I solved it by installing a different kernel. i went to the Update Manager -> View -> Linux kernels -> and installed the latest supported (5.0.0-31)
After restarting the problem was solved, and also some other minor ones, like the function keys not working properly.
Hope this helps

Good idea, but he's got 19.2 and if updated current it should have that very kernel. Maybe he should update as his output shows 5.0.0-27-generic x86_64

Unfortunately that version and also the latest available kernel 5.3.0-24 still isn't fixing the issue
