Folding at home GPU (new user)

Post by poppster »

Good afternoon. I am new to linux and linux mint.
I have the latest version of Mint Cinnamon and I am running the following hardware.

Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon 4.4.8
Intel© Pentium© CPU G3220 @ 3.00GHz × 2
8GB ddr3 ram
1 TB HDD
AMD 7950 3GB GPU >> Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Tahiti PRO [Radeon HD 7950/8950 OEM / R9 280] (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])

I have noticed that my GPU refuses to bring in any work orders for folding at home, while my other Windows 10 desktops/laptops will.
My GPU shows in the program, and I have the settings as "GPU = TRUE" in settings.
I am not using any proprietary drivers for my GPU either.

I do keep getting this message when I am in driver manager:
E:The repository 'cdrom://Linux Mint 19.3 _Tricia_ - Release amd64 20191213 bionic Release' does not have a Release file. (I believe I just unclicked the CD under sources to remove).

Am I doing something wrong? Should I have a different driver version?

hi poppster,

you would be better if you can move your post into the Folding at home thread. This is where all the folders are and you would stand a much better chance of getting a reply.

If you can not move it you could ask a moderator to do it for you. If you can not do either of them then go to this thread and post your question there, follow the link below.

Just a thought, have you got the GPU,s.txt file in your Linux installation. I beleive that it is NOT downloaded by default. You can check to see if you have it. It should be in /var/lib/fahclient.

STAY SAFE

Best regards Keith

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I appreciate it.

Once I get home I will check the directory and see if the GPU's .txt file is in there.

I'm not sure how to move a post here without just copying the thread link; but if a MOD sees this, please feel free to move it.

Much appreciated,

J.

The log says that there are no compute devices that matched my GPU, and that I need to update my graphics drivers?
