[SOLVED] No sound Chromebook pixel 2015 LS (used to work)

Post by linuxbootsamus »

Hello, everyone, I have used Linux Mint on and off since 2011 love it and support it 100%. Reaching out for some help on this one as again I have never had a problem that I could not google and fix myself. I used this Chromebook Pixel 2015 with Linux Mint Cinnamon Tara last year with no issue and onboard sound working. I had to use the program Qasmixer to detect hardware defaults but then headphones though the audio jack work and onboard speakers worked great. always needed more than the onboard software to complete this. Now I am back and excited to stay with a dual booted system! The problem is now that in my time gone it seems that sound has broken. At this time I am using USB-C Pixel earbud which gives me sound no problem. So it is not a huge priority, but I wanted to see if the community could help me out on whatever broke since I have been gone. Not sure about all the info you need so I will post what the forum said to post. Please let me know what other info you need, I also added the what Qasmixer says is my <hw Card /> reporting at this time. Thank you in advance!

Hi linuxbootsamus, and welcome to the forum.

The audio driver is going through some changes, and this probably broke your sound. Please paste the output from running lsmod | grep snd in the terminal. I'm hoping to see something that we can try blacklisting that might fix this.

The output from this command might also help:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -C1 -E 'ALSA|HDA|sof|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel'

The outputs actually look pretty good. I was expecting to see some snd-sof-* modules that might have interfered with your sound, but that isn't the case.

Let's see if this points us in the right direction. Start a song or video and while it's playing run pacmd list-sinks in the terminal. Just in case, also run pacmd list-cards and post both outputs.

Here you go! At this point I am not really sure what you are looking for... if you want to explain so I can understand so help myself next time I am willing to learn but am newer to figuring out this driver thing. Thanks again!

Re: No sound Chromebook pixel 2015 LS (used to work)

Post by MrEen »

What I was looking at was where is sound playing to, and what have you set as the Profile. It all looks fine in that regard, and this is probably your issue:

Code: Select all

		analog-output-speaker: Speakers (priority 10000, latency offset 0 usec, available: unknown)
That unknown can be caused by many things and is a tricky bugger to solve sometimes. Sometimes a shutdown, not reboot, fixes it. In many cases Windows causes it, but I doubt that's the case here. :D

Let's try reinstalling the sound base and see if that cures it:

Code: Select all

apt install --reinstall alsa-base alsa-utils pulseaudio linux-sound-base libasound2
Reboot after running that in the terminal and see if things work. Have you tested to see if regular headphones work?

Reinstalled and rebooted no change. It seems that my mic isn't working either, but I assume that is connected to my sound card. I cross-posted this on Reddit and someone suggests to go back to the release it worked on last year. Is that an option even? If so what would be the drawbacks be if I did go back to an older version? I have always been on the newest when released.

I will look for some normal audio jack headphone and test them and let you know of the results.

Thanks again

No, go on normal audio jack headphone and my headphones had a mic attached and it did not work as well. Still nothing new with the reinstall as well. Any other ideas?

Do you still have the 5.0 kernel installed that 19.3 came with originally? If so, try booting to that and see if sound works there.

You can open the Update Manager and click on View > Linux kernel. Click on 5.0 in the left pane and see if there's any kernels in the right pane that says Installed.

If so, to boot to it, you need to get the grub menu to come up when you boot. I believe holding the Shift key should do it. Then go to Advanced Options and choose the older kernel.

There were a lot of changes in the 5.3 series of kernels for sound, that might affect your computer. As you said it used to work, this might show us if it's still possible, then we'll work on getting you on to a supported kernel.

There a decent chance when Mint 20 comes out in a few months that sound will work out-of-the-box again. All of the sound related stuff will be upgraded from what we have now.

Please also post the output of ls -l /usr/share/alsa/ucm. This time I'm looking to see if there is a folder with rt5677 in the name.

I'm wondering if that stereo-fallback is the issue, and we might want to see HiFi in it's place here:

Code: Select all

1 sink(s) available.
  * index: 0
	name: <alsa_output.platform-bdw-rt5677.stereo-fallback>

I was able to find that I do have the kernel installed for 5.0. I can't seem to get to the menu to switch it so I guess I will just cross my fingers and wait or I can just download old 5.0 kernel. I will watch a video on the switching thing, but overall like I said I do have a workaround right now with the USB-C headphones with mic.

Downloading an older kernel doesn't help as the system will always default to the newest kernel at bootup.

We can try another method. Let me see cat /etc/default/grub

If this doesn't work, I've found a copy of UCM files we can try adding to /usr/share/alsa/ucm where we'll create the rt5677 folder then add the files. The system might detect that and use those files. In case I lose them between now and then, they're located here: https://github.com/jakeday/chromebook-p ... bdw-rt5677

EDIT: We should also look at ls -l /usr/share/alsa/ucm/sof-skl_hda_card to see what's there.

All right. I believe this is the correct instruction:

Run xed admin:///etc/default/grub and when the file opens find these lines:

Code: Select all

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=hidden
GRUB_TIMEOUT=0
Change them to this:

Code: Select all

GRUB_TIMEOUT_STYLE=menu
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
Save and close the file. Ignore any warnings in the terminal then run sudo update-grub. On rebooting, you should now get the grub menu, where you can arrow down to Advanced Options to find a previous kernel to boot to.

I don't think there was anything in the ls command output that was helpful, so if the above doesn't work, we'll try what I was planning originally.

I'll be off to bed very shortly, and have a lot of work to do this weekend after a severe storm today, so I'm not sure when I'll have those instructions ready for you if the older kernel doesn't help.

This did work to get the menu up and I got back to 5.0, but no change. No onboard sound working or mic or with using audio jack headphone and mic.

sorry :(

Darn! Is there a 4.15 kernel installed that you can boot to? Again, you can check with Update Manager > View > Linux kernels.

If none are installed, you could install the highest (it's still supported) then boot to it via the grub menu.

We're in a period of transition with the audio driver, and I've seen fixes added recently for the rt5677, but that's in the 5.5 kernel and other pieces necessary for it aren't yet in the Ubuntu (and therefore Mint) repositories. I'm hoping the 4.15 kernel might fix you as it I don't think it has any of the new audio driver code in it.

On the 4.15 kernel right now and no sound. This is a bit strange and I am not sure how these kernel things work but I know I had everything working great on this before right out of the box with minimal troubleshooting. I tired out galliumos before coming back to Mint last year and mint support this machine a ton better with HiDPI than galliumos. The sound worked better in mint than galliumos out of the box as well.

Maybe I am remembering wrong?

any other ideas... I was told if you can't help me fix it no one can haha

Thanks again :(
