cant install Windows XP in virtualbox

Post by dorothy39 »

The first attempt to install XP stalled out on formatting.
Now I get
"Cannot create the machine folder XP in the parent folder /home/dot/VirtualBox VMs.
This folder already exists and possibly belongs to another machine."

I tried removing and reinstalling vb a couple of times. didn't help
I deleted the XP file in the home file system. didn't help.

The vb manager gives this
"Runtime error opening '/home/dot/VirtualBox VMs/XP/XP.vbox' for reading: -102 (File not found.).
/build/virtualbox-xrKdVR/virtualbox-5.2.34-dfsg/src/VBox/Main/src-server/MachineImpl.cpp[745] (nsresult Machine::i_registeredInit()).
Result Code:
NS_ERROR_FAILURE (0x80004005)
Component:
MachineWrap
Interface:
IMachine {85cd948e-a71f-4289-281e-0ca7ad48cd89}"

I did this once before and everything was fine, but then I had to start over when I replaced it all with windows so I could dual boot linux.

Found a button that produced this.

"Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver is either not loaded or not set up correctly. Please reinstall virtualbox-dkms package and load the kernel module by executing

'modprobe vboxdrv'

as root.

If your system has EFI Secure Boot enabled you may also need to sign the kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, vboxnetadp, vboxpci) before you can load them. Please see your Linux system's documentation for more information.

where: suplibOsInit what: 3 VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908) - The support driver is not installed. On linux, open returned ENOENT. "

I found vb-dkms had not installed this time. So now it is.
Being a rank newbie dummy I do not know how to execute the modprobe command as root.
I am reading some of the books on commands but they are not helping.

If you're starting over with VBox, I would recommend you purge 5.2 and install 6.1 directly from Oracle. 5.2 and 6.0 have only a few months of support left and many features are being retired (especially the VBoxVGA graphics adapter), so there's a good chance you will have to redo everything.

Also, you say you did this previously. Meaning installed WinXP? To my knowledge, no way to do that without a retail license (not OEM). Is that what you did? Anyhoo, for future reference, copy out your VM files if you need to reinstall, then copy back in and add to VBox from Menu.

I previously used the same program from an old computer, installed and register.
Installed printer driver successfully.

Will try erasing VB and installing new version from Oracle.
I guess earlier advice from an old post about not downloading from internet does not apply here.

Actually it looks like I should have updated 5.2 instead of removing it and trying to get 6.2 from scratch.

Depends on the kind of OEM. Some are specific for a computer brand. System Builder cd's work fine in Virtualbox

Then restore with Timeshift and do over that way.
