Anyone else having issues Kernel 5.3.0-53.109?

Post by LanceM »

This kernel is working on my I5-8500 system, but resulted in a black screen on boot with the AMD 3200G system. REISUB and CTRL+ALT+DEL had no effect. I did two forced shutdowns before taking the easy route and used Timeshift with live session to recover. I blacklisted it. This is the first update I've ever had a serious problem with.

Could you try the 4.15 kernel?
Also, in case someone has similar symptoms, could you post the output to inxi below in case there is a common theme somewhere along the line.

Code: Select all

What kernel? It should be the 5.3.0-53.47.

I'm having this trouble too. Tried using console (Ctrl-Alt-F1) and
shutdown -h "now"
but it doesn't show anything. Reboot also hangs after turning off monitor.
Happened after kernel update.

Also having trouble getting boot menu to choose older kernel, but will likely
be able to use grub-customizer.

could you post the output to the following command but in your own post with a title saying kernel upgrade (which kernel) causes (the problem)

Code: Select all

 inxi -Fxz
The more ppl post, the quicker it will get picked up as a bug

Here you are. Had already set back to "51" which shuts down and restarts fine. I'll reset to that for time being.

The amdgpu driver is involved in both cases here. That might be a suspect in the kernel issue. There are 5 references to amdgpu in the 5.3.0-53.47 changelog.

Ok, with 3 x inxi reports back from the same kernel update, the common theme is Ryzen cpu / AMD Raven graphics card.
Where to file that bug report?

I am, but I can't submit the report. Needs to be an affected user for the apport-collect program to function to supply the needed info.

FYI, this is coming now from Asus UX303LN with I7 processor. Seems to restart fine.

That would be best. You'll need to sign up for an Ubuntu One account I believe. The sooner the necessary info gets to the devs, the sooner it gets fixed.

The thread has been made sticky for a week. See comment below post #1 to find out why:
Moved from "Chat" to "Installation & Boot". Made the thread sticky for 7 days. K5.3.0-53 seems to have some "negative potential".

Your name & post will be on top of the list only as long as your post is the most recent post submitted in this thread.
